The Intelligent Systems Program (ISP) is a multidisciplinary graduate program at the University of Pittsburgh dedicated to applied artificial intelligence (AI). ISP PhD students work with faculty who perform cutting-edge research in applied AI at the School of Computing and Information, the School of Medicine, the School of Law, the School of Education, the Swanson School of Engineering, and the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. The program is well-known for the quality of research performed by our PhD students, as shown by numerous best paper awards at top research conferences and other honors. Graduates of our program hold tenure-track positions at leading universities and are among the leaders in industry and government domains because of the many opportunities available to them during their doctoral studies

ISP faculty perform their research in multiple areas, however the program is most know by research excellence in the following areas where PhD students are able to work with highly regarded researchers with international reputations for excellence in their fields

* Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Retrieval
* Intelligent Tutoring Systems and Educational Technology
* Machine Learning and Decision Making
* Biomedical Informatics
* Artificial Intelligence and Law
* Computer Vision

Besides academics, Pittsburgh is a great place for living ( The University of Pittsburgh is located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh – a vibrant area with public parks, restaurants, libraries and museums all within walking distance! Oakland is also home to several other universities including Carnegie Mellon University. Our faculty have strong collaboration ties with Carnegie Mellon. Our PhD students frequently take graduate classes there through PCHE program (<>)  and a number of ISP graduates continued their training at Carnegie Mellon as Postdoctoral Researchers.
