CALL FOR PAPERS
1st International Workshop on Research & Innovation for Secure Societies
RISS 2018 @ 12th International Conference on Communications - COMM 2018
June 14-16, Bucharest, Romania
Web site: http://www.comms.ro/workshops.html
************************************************************************

High expansion of urban population and recent world events
complemented by the alarming increase of the number of threats to
infrastructure safety have mobilized Authorities to redesign societal
security concepts. Law Enforcement Authorities are focusing and aiming
consistently their actions at preventing crimes and protecting people,
properties and critical infrastructures.

With the accelerated advances of communications and storage
technologies, access to critical information acquired from various
sensors and sources (e.g., CCTV cameras, satellite data, etc.) has
been significantly eased. Nevertheless, manipulation and processing of
such high amount of diverse data is still a steady challenge and most
of the existing solutions involve massive human intervention.
Computer-assisted or automated technologies are now becoming more and
more attractive to substitute expensive human resources in the
existing processing and decisional systems.

In this particular context, the 1st International Workshop on Research
& Innovation for Secure Societies - RISS 2018 aims to bring together
researchers from academia and industry, end-users, law-enforcing
agencies and citizen groups to share experiences and explore multi-
and interdisciplinary areas where additional research and development
are needed, identify possible collaboration and consider the societal
impact of such technologies.

Authors are invited to submit original, previously unpublished work,
reporting on novel and significant research contributions, on-going
research projects, experimental results and recent developments
related to the following topics (but not limited to):
- Surveillance systems and solutions,
- Robust computer vision algorithms (e.g., machine learning systems,
object tracking, behaviour analysis, action recognition, speech
analysis and natural language processing),
- Information fusion from various sensors,
- Big Data for security and crime prevention,
- Social media and cyber security,
- Metadata generation, video database indexing, searching and
browsing, benchmarking,
- Embedded systems and middleware,
- Biometrics,
- Forensics and crime scene reconstruction,
- Unmanned aerial, terrestrial, underwater vehicles and robots,
- Wireless communications and networks for video surveillance, video
coding, compression, authentication, watermarking, location-dependent
services,
- Case studies, practical systems and testbeds,
- Data protection, privacy protection, civil liberties and social
exclusion issues.
