Workshop at Pervasive Health 2019 <>
13th EAI International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare - 20-23 May 2019, Trento, Italy.
Addressing Grand Challenges in Healthcare through Smart Clothing - SCAH <>
As wearable technologies enable further care and research in everyday living conditions, a renewed interest in overcoming barriers to garment-integrated technologies has emerged as a potential next wave of wearable technological capabilities in the context of healthcare.

Compared to devices like wristbands, smart clothing can occupy larger surface areas of the body thus expanding access to body physiology and sensory perception, as well as providing expanded actuation and interventional potential. However, soft, textile-based forms present increased challenges for modeling, prototyping, manufacturing, and usability expectations (among other variables).

This one-day, hands-on and thought-provoking workshop at PervasiveHealth 2019 aims to explore the opportunities and obstacles for Smart Clothing in healthcare and to identify the grand challenges for researchers in this area.

We are seeking synergistic contributions from a wide array of participants, e.g., from healthcare practice, engineering and healthcare research, clothing design, human factors, and human-computer interaction. Potential participants are invited to submit a position paper outlining their perspective on the opportunities and challenges for smart clothing in healthcare. Submissions could address, amongst others:
. Why clothing? What does smart clothing facilitate that current wearable devices do not?
. Why is smart clothing not currently more available for healthcare applications?
. What are the pathways from a novel therapeutic or interventional garment to commercialization? Where are the "valleys of death"?
. What are the pathways from a clinical need to a viable smart clothing solution? Where are stakeholder interests in conflict?
. Which clinical domains would be the most transformed by viable smart clothing solutions? Why?

Additionally, we strongly encourage participants to bring their own examples of smart clothing (targeted at addressing healthcare challenges) and/or devices they currently use in clinical practice. These demonstrators will serve as a starting point for focused discussions on particular aspects related to smart clothing and healthcare.

. March 15h, 2019: Workshop papers deadline
. March 29th, 2019: Workshop paper notification
. April 10th, 2019: Workshop paper camera ready

. All workshop papers will be published together with PervasiveHealth Proceedings. All accepted and presented papers will be published by ACM and made available through ACM Digital Library (TBC). Proceedings are indexed in leading indexing services, including Ei Compendex, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, CrossRef, Google Scholar, DBLP, as well as EAI's own EU Digital Library (EUDL).
. All accepted authors are eligible to submit an extended version in a fast track of EAI Scopus indexed journal.
. As a result of this workshop, we aim to draft a "Grand Challenges: Smart Clothing and Healthcare" position document that can serve as a future research agenda.
