A sampling of things that are happening in the world of CHI Local
SIGs:


Europe


Toulouse SIGCHI will sponsor 3 meetings during June: 8/06: Sylvie
Athenes,"La perception visuelle, une approche neurophysiologique;"
9/06: Prof Christopher Wickens, "Air Traffic Control Automation
versus Freeflight: Implications for Pilot Attention, Workload and
Choice;" 22/06: Jean-Luc Vinot, "La perception visuelle: une
approche arts graphiques appliquées aux IHM."


SIGCHI Italy is meeting on June 15 at Torino, to visit the usability
lab at CSELT, the research center of TELECOM, the largest
telecommunication company in Italy, where they primarely develop
speech interfaces.  The meeting will include a discussion of next
election of officers and of the organisation of a one day conference
on HCI in Italian next May 2001.


SIGCHI.NL will host two meetings during June.  6 June, Utrecht:
"CHI 2000.5" (several speakers will review and share their experiences
and impressions of CHI 2000 with those who could not be there at the
time.  13 June, Groningen: "Interaction Design, Graphic Design and
Navigation," two sessions, with examples from practice.


SwissCHI's program on 25 May: "Usability Engineering In Harmony -
UE in a low budget project... it is possible!"  Speakers: Susanne
Ulltjaern, Ascom AG & Kimmo Ulltjaern, Crosspoint Informatic AG.



Africa

CHI-SA 2000, South Africa's first HCI conference (held during May),
was an enormous success.



Americas (outside USA)

CapCHI's meeting on June 15: "Usability in Practice: The Design of
an Online Community," Vidya Shankar Narayan and Benjamin Gianni.


ToRCHI is co-sponsoring a full-day tutorial on June 17 entitled,
"Usable for the Rest of the World: A Practical Guide to Carrying Out
Successful International User Studies."  Instructor: Susan Dray.
ToRCHI's meeting late in May provided attendees of CHI 2000 an
opportunity to present/discuss/comment about their experiences at
CHI 2000 and the relevance of SIGCHI to ToRCHI.



Asia / Pacific

SIGCHI_NZ is presenting a full-day symposium on computer-
human interaction on 29 June.  The keynote address: "Has CHI
Missed the Bus on the Infobahn?" from Mark Apperly.  Other
program highlights: research group presentations and SIGCHI_NZ's
annual general meeting.



United States

BayCHI's main program June 13 features two presentations:
"Community Building on the Web: Three Immutable Laws, Nine
Timeless Design Strategies," Amy Jo Kim, NAIMA, and
"Design in Harmony with Human Life," David Gilmore & Velma Velazquez,
IDEO.  A drawing will be held during the meeting for free copies
of Amy Jo's new book, plus BayCHI officer elections will be held.

An initial meeting of the BayCHI Mobile Applications BOF will be
held on June 8 to discuss the types of discussions and
presentations desired for future meetings.  Two full-day tutorials
will also be offered during June:
Howard Tamler's "Bridging the Gap: Communication Skills for Usability
Professionals" (June 4);
Kevin Mullet's & Erric Solomon's "Cultivating Convergence:
Cross-Product Interface Design for Applications and Web Sites(June 24).


ConnCHI's meeting late in May featured a review and discussion
of CHI 2000.


DC_CHI will visit the Newseum in Arlington, VA on Saturday am,
June 10th.


GB/SIGCHI's June 13 program: The Design and Usability Testing
Center at Bentley College -- a tour and overview of services offered
by the center.


LowellCHI will meet June 22.  Speaker: Nicole Yankelovich, Sun
Microsystems; Presentation: "Instant Messaging in the Workplace."


MOCHI's June 14 meeting will feature Professor John Laird on the
topic of "Building Intelligent Synthetic Characters for Computer
Games".


NYC CHI will meet the evening of GenevaJune 12.
Speaker: Jae Yun Moon
Title: "What makes Internet users visit cyber stores again? In
search of design factors for customer loyalty."


On BuckCHI's June 13 program, the team at Resource Marketing
will talk about their multi-disciplinary, customer-centered
approach to world-class web design.


CHIFOO will meet June 20.  Gene Lynch will talk about Max, the critic
inside WebCriteria.  (CHIFOO's May meeting featured James Bohem
on "Exploring the Human Side of Information Security.")


Puget Sound SIGCHI's June 21st meeting will feature Ted Boren on
"Think Aloud Protocols in Usability Testing."


Milwau-CHI's program on June 6 will feature Susan Hawkins on
"The Total User Experience."
