The IEEE Symposium on Visual Languages and Human-Centric Computing
(VL/HCC04) celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2004 with a rich and
exciting programme, including 2 Invited Talks, 2 Workshops, 3
Tutorials, 8 Paper sessions, with 42 paper presentations.

The symposium is the premiere site for research on the design,
formalization, implementation, and evaluation of computing languages
that are easier to learn, easier to use, and easier to understand by a
broader group of people, regardless of whether they use entirely
visual technology, text, or instead use sound, touch, virtual reality,
the web, or any other technologies.

The 2004 edition of the Symposium will be held in Rome, Italy, at
late September, a magnificent season for the town, which will allow
participants to enjoy a unique scenario for scientific discussion. The
main conference will take place at the Residenza di Ripetta, a
conference center in a former baroque convent at the heart of the
town. Workshops and tutorials will take place at the University of
Rome.

Following on in the line of the success of this event at the previous
edition of 2003 in Auckland, New Zealand, VL/HCC04 will host a
Graduate Student Consortium Event on Designing for Diversity in
End-User Development Tools,

VL/HCC04 is colocated with the Int. Conf. on Graph Transformation
(ICGT04), allowing participants to have a closer look and share this
important, related field.

Paul Dourish, Software as an Embodied Phenomenon: Cognitive, Social
and Cultural Aspects of Programs and Programming
Margaret-Anne Storey, Improving Flow in Software DevelopmentÊ through
Graphical Representations (joint invited speaker with ICGT2004)

Workshops. VL/HCC'04 will host two satellite workshops on Sep. 30, 2004:
Foundations of Spreadsheets (FOS'04), organised by Martin Erwig
Visual Languages and Formal Methods (VLFM'04), organised by Mark Minas

Tutorials. VL/HCC'04 will host three tutorials on Sep. 26, 2004:

Paper Sessions. The main conferenceÊ is composed of 8 sessions.

and Evaluation of End-User ProgrammingÊ Environments, Visual Language

Graph Layout and End-User Programming, Empirical Studies of End-User
