First ESP Graduate Student Workshop 1997
Call For Expression of Interest

The Empirical Studies of Programmers (ESP) workshops are the
premier forum in North America for the presentation of both field
and laboratory studies of programmers . As an adjunct to the 1997
ESP workshop, a graduate student workshop is being planned. If you
are a graduate student working on a graduate (MS or PhD) degree
in an area with relevance to empirical observation or theoretical
analysis of programming and software engineering behavior, or if you
supervise or know of a student who would be interested, please read on.

This workshop will be a chance for graduate students to gather to
discuss issues dealing with empirical studies of programmers, to
present their ideas for thesis/dissertation topics, and to report
and discuss preliminary dissertation results in a non-threatening
environment. It will also allow the students who are doing
research in the area to socialize and share ideas with other students
who are doing research in related areas.

In order to maximize the gain from the workshop, each attendee
will be expected to write a paper, and to give a presentation to
the rest of the group. It is anticipated that this paper will be
related to their research. Students at all points in a
thesis/dissertation process are encouraged to participate. A
light reviewing/refereeing process may take place. Authors who have
completed a large portion of their research are encouraged to
also submit results to the ESP7 workshop.

The graduate student workshop will overlap with the main ESP7
workshop, and all papers will be collected into a proceedings
which will be distributed to all participants of the ESP7
workshop. In addition, all presenters at the graduate student
conference will be given a poster Friday night at the ESP7
workshop, so that all presenters will have a chance to get
feedback from researchers currently working in this area.
Students will be encouraged to stay and attend the ESP
conference. However the graduate student workshop is a separate
event which will occur before the conference.

THE DATE AND PLACE

This graduate student conference will be held at the Sheraton
Hotel in Old Town Alexandria, Va. It will begin Friday morning,
Oct. 24, and will continue through the opening cocktail party for
the ESP7 workshop.

If you are interested in participating in this workshop, send an
E-mail message by May 1 with a likely title for your
presentation, or a list of ESP topics you are interested in,
