[DEADLINE EXTENSION] ** CALL FOR PAPERS AND PARTICIPATION **

We invite researchers and practitioners interested in aligning social, computational and technological approaches to mitigating the challenge of misinformation in social media to join us at

SocInfo 2020 Workshop - Challenging Misinformation:
Exploring Limits and Approaches
in Pisa (and online) on the 6th of October - (half day)

Data scientists, Media Specialists, Computer scientists, Social scientists, Designers, Journalists (not limited to) are all invited to actively participate in the workshop and share their experiences, opinions and perspective towards a better common understanding of the problem.

This hands-on workshop will unpack the state-of-the-art on social sciences and technical solutions for tackling misinformation online, challenging the participants to first critically reflect upon existing limitations, to then co-create a future with integrating perspectives.

Misinformation: a socio-technical issue with multiple perspectives
Much earlier than the acknowledged COVID-19 infodemic, the abundance of digital
information circulating (accurate and not) that accompanied the global pandemic, information disorder online has been examined from multiple perspectives. Examining the limits of human cognition for dealing with and spreading misinformation, nudging social media users, fact-checking more effectively, automating detection and correction are some of the partial solutions in place. However, as a multilayered problem, there is not a single and comprehensive solution capable of stopping misinformation, and existing approaches are all limited for different reasons: the way end-users are (or not) engaged, limited data sources, subjectivity associated with the judgment, etc.

Purely technical solutions that disregard the social structures that lead to the spread of misinformation, or the different ways societal groups are affected are not only limited, they can also be harmful by obfuscating the problem. More comprehensive answers to the problem can only emerge when there is an articulation of diverse perspectives and ideas, requiring an interdisciplinary approach that includes computer scientists, social scientists and technology designers in the co-creation of features and delivery methods.
