AIM AND SCOPE
------------------------------------------------------
Neurodevelopmental deficits (NDD) are characterized by specific limitations on language, attention, or motor control abilities and impairment of social skills (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, specific learning disorder). NDDs result in emotional, physical, social, academic, and economic consequences for individuals, and in turn families, and society. Upon diagnosis, families report significant delays in treatment initiation and unsatisfactory levels of treatment monitoring and there is a need to establish effective easy-to-access strategies for assessing, treating, and monitoring NDD.
Rapid progress in the area of robotics offers excellent chances for innovations for children with NDDs thanks to robots allowing the execution of repetitive tasks which can be tailored according to the needs of the individuals. Robots thus offer the opportunity to deliver automated interventions, enable therapy to be delivered over a distance, enable inclusive and collaborative environments to promote group activity and social inclusion, and personalize treatment procedures.

This workshop aims to bring experts from multi-disciplinary backgrounds together to share ideas and discuss the design of such robotic solutions for the targeted focus group.
The main aim of this workshop will be to provide a venue for young researchers to share their recent advances as well as to listen and interact with senior researchers with different backgrounds working in NDDs.

INVITED SPEAKERS
------------------------------------------------------
Carlos Cifuentes
Carlos A. Cifuentes is an Associate Professor in Human-Robot Interaction at Bristol Robotics Laboratory, the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK, and Visiting Professor at the Universidad del Rosario (Colombia) and EPF Graduate School of Engineering (France). In 2017 his work was lauded as one of five history-changing ideas in Latin America by History Channel. In 2020 he was elevated to the grade of IEEE Senior Member, and in 2022 he was appointed as Associate Editor for IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine. His research on Human-Robot Interaction is world-leading, and his team’s research has conclusively shown the benefits of using robots in a healthcare context.

Maura Casadio
Maura Casadio is Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy. She received the M.S. degree in electronic engineering in 2002 from the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy, the M.S. degree in bioengineering, in 2007 and the Ph.D. degree in robotics and bioengineering, in 2006, both from the University of Genoa. She worked as postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Physiology, Northwestern University and the Robotics Laboratory, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (now Shirley Ryan ability Lab), Chicago, IL, from 2008 to 2011. Her main areas of interest are neural control of movement and forces, rehabilitation, biomedical robotics, sensory processing, artificial and augmented sensing (proprioception/ somatosensation) and body–machine interfaces.

Silvia Orlandi
Assistant Professor at the University of Bologna. Her research focuses on developing multi-modal intelligent technologies for motor and cognitive neurorehabilitation through artificial intelligence, biomedical signal processing, computer vision, and rehabilitation engineering techniques.
