     Calls for Demonstrations, Workshop Submissions and Student Volunteers

[Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message.]

Summary
=======
  * Demonstration proposals are now being accepted. The deadline is
    August 20, 2007.
  * Submissions for the workshop "The Role of Design in Wearable
    Computing" are now being accepted. The deadline is August 24, 2007.
  * Applications for student volunteers are now being accepted. The
    deadline is August 31, 2007.
  * For more details, please see http://iswc.net

Call for Demonstrations
=======================
Demonstrations provide an opportunity to show research prototypes and
works-in-progress to colleagues for comment in a relaxed atmosphere.
Both independent demonstrations and those accompanying accepted papers
and posters are welcome. Demonstrations will not be published in the
main conference proceedings, but will be included in the demonstration
handout. Accommodations (power, space, etc...) will be limited, so
participants should plan to be mobile and self-supported. To apply to
perform a demonstration, please send the following information to the
Demonstrations Chair, Matt Reynolds ([log in to unmask]) by Monday,
August 20, 2007:

  * Demonstration title
  * Authors and affiliations
  * A one-page summary that describes what you plan to demonstrate,
    including a 200 word abstract. Only the abstract will be included
    in the demonstration handout; the rest of the summary will be used
    to judge the quality of the submission.
  * A 640 x 480 JPG photo or diagram to be included in the demonstration
    handout alongside the abstract (which will be resized to 43 mm x 57 mm)
  * A description of your requirements for space, power, network
    connectivity, lighting, and sound.

Notifications of acceptance for demonstrations will be delivered by
Monday, September 3, 2007.

Call for papers: ISWC'07 Workshop: The Role of Design in Wearable Computing
 ===========================================================================
Important dates:
  Paper submissions due:   August 24
  Acceptance notification: No later than September 7
  Final versions due:      October 1
  Workshop:                October 13 (Saturday)

Papers should be submitted in PDF format via e-mail to
iswc_design_workshop [at] vt.edu.

This workshop will provide a forum to discuss the role of design in
wearable computing. Wearable computing spans a broad range of
interests and expertise, not all of which can be adequately
represented by a technical paper in an IEEE Computer Society
proceedings.

As wearable computing becomes more mainstream and if it is to continue
becoming more mainstream, it is important for ISWC to provide
appropriate venues for presenting the latest advances in textile,
fashion, and industrial design. The objective of this workshop is to
come up with a set of recommendations on what the appropriate venues
should be and to discuss what the important design issues are for
wearable computing.

Potential topics for the workshop include but are not limited to the
following:

  * How should design contributions be evaluated?
  * What should be the format(s) for a design submission and
    presentation?
  * How should these contributions be documented and archived,
    e.g. web site, video?
  * What guidance about the program committee's expectations should be
    provided to designers who wish to submit a regular paper?
  * For design contributors who are in tenure-track academic positions,
    what are their requirements in terms of building dossiers for
    tenure and promotion? What are the requirements of designers at
    start-ups? At design firms? In graduate school?
  * Is the difference between a design contribution and a technical
    contribution simply an emphasis on wearable instead of an emphasis
    on computing?
  * Wearable computing has had some problems gaining legitimacy with
    computing researchers; are there similar problems for designers?
  * Can we provide case studies of interdisciplinary wearable
    computing projects that show the advantages of bridging that gap
    between the cultures of different disciplines?
  * What are the important design issues for wearable computing? How
    will addressing them advance wearable computing? How will
    addressing them advance the particular area of expertise, e.g.,
    how will e-textiles advance the field of textiles?

The intended audience for the workshop is those whose research
emphasis is on the design aspects of wearable computing, such as
industrial design, fashion, textiles, and applications, and at all
career stages (e.g., grad student, academics pre- and post-tenure, and
industry).

Please submit a position paper of up to 5 pages on a topic relevant to
the workshop. Authors are encouraged to include examples of their
work to illustrate their position. Authors of accepted papers will be
expected to present the paper at the workshop and to participate in
the discussion of recommendations. Papers should be submitted in PDF
format via e-mail to iswc_design_workshop [at] vt.edu.

Papers submitted to the workshop must not be under review by any other
conference or publication during the review cycle, and must not be
previously published or accepted for publication elsewhere. Accepted
papers will be published in PDF format on the ISWC web site.

Call for Student Volunteers
===========================
Student volunteer activities include, but are not limited to helping
with packing bags, setting up signs, badge checks, helping with
on-site registration, ushering, photocopying, small errands, and
assisting with audiovisual equipment. Student volunteers will receive
free conference registration (including the reception and meals), a
shared-occupancy hotel room, and potentially some support with travel
expenses.

Student volunteers may not be able to attend all sessions and may also
have to arrive a day or two before the conference start date.
However, we will work to schedule volunteer time around the students'
needs so we can to help interested students attend.

Being a student volunteer at ISWC is a fantastic opportunity to interact
with the wearable community, even without financial support from your
university. If you are interested or know a student who is interested in
becoming a student volunteer, please send e-mail by August 31st to
[log in to unmask] with the following information:

  * Name and Contact Details
  * Advisor, Department and University
  * Research interests
  * Degree program (Doctoral/Masters/Undergrad)
  * Have you ever attended ISWC or ISMAR before?
  * Have you ever been a student volunteer at a conference? Which one?
  * Do you have any special skills? (audio/visual equipment, wireless
    networking equipment, data entry, etc.)
  * If required, would you be willing to come to the conference location
    one day early to help with conference arrangements?
