ODear CHI colleagues,

I am really enjoying it here at Rutgers -- excellent colleagues and
state-wide resources with real growth potential. I encourage senior
members of the field with strong academic and administrative credentials
to send me their contact information (including eaddress) right away.
The deadline was tomorrow but it may be extended. We are very
interested in finding strong candidates and hope that this will include
good numbers of women and minorities.

Below I am enclosing the ad and under that some less boiler-plate
information about the whole university and the Camden campus.

RUTGERS, THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY
CAMDEN CAMPUS

PROVOST AND DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL-CAMDEN

Rutgers University-Camden invites nominations and applications for
the position of Provost/Dean of the Graduate School, effective
July 1, 1997.

Rutgers, first chartered in 1766 as Queens College, is the eighth
oldest institution of higher education in the United States. The
university changed its name in 1825 to honor Colonel Henry Rutgers,
a Revolutionary War veteran and former trustee of the college.
From a colonial college with few students and a classic liberal arts
curriculum, Rutgers has evolved into a land-grant institution and
major public university.

Through legislative acts in 1945 and 1956, all of the university's
divisions were designated "The State University of New Jersey."
Since that time, Rutgers has continued to expand its undergraduate,
graduate, and professional offerings to better serve the changing
needs of the state and its citizens. Today, Rutgers, The State
University of New Jersey has approximately 48,000 students and
more than 8,000 regular faculty and staff. The university comprises
29 degree-granting divisions: 12 exclusively undergraduate,
12 exclusively graduate, and five that offer both undergraduate and
graduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and
16 in New Brunswick.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE: The Camden Campus enrolls
about 5,000 students in five separate collegiate units: Camden
College of Arts and Sciences, University College, School of Business,
School of Law, and the Graduate School. The overall campus
budget, including financial aid, is in excess of $50 million. There
are nine professional programs in the five units; all are accredited
by the appropriate national agency. There are 26 baccalaureate
programs, 12 masters, and one Juris Doctor program on the
campus.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Candidates for consideration must
1) present academic credentials relevant for appointment to the rank
of Full Professor with tenure in an appropriate scholarly program of
an AAU institution; 2) possess administrative abilities, especially in
academic planning, curricular initiation and review, faculty
development, resource allocation, university budgeting, and student
recruitment; 3) exhibit a commitment to teaching excellence and
research within a research university context; 4) show an ability to
work in a variety of culturally diverse settings; 5) relate positively to
the campus mission in its urban setting; 6) exhibit the ability to
encourage shared decisionmaking; and 7) document a record of
success in fundraising activities.

There are 25 buildings, worth an estimated $200 million, situated on
a 23-acre campus just four blocks from the Delaware River,
immediately across from Philadelphia.

SALARY: Competitive, depending upon experience and
qualifications

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: For initial consideration, send a
letter of application, an up-to-date resume, and the names, addresses,
and telephone numbers of five references to:

Chair, Search Committee for Provost/
Dean of the Graduate School-Camden
Office of the President
Old Queens Building
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey
New Brunswick, New Jersey 08903-5062

FINAL DATE: Review of applications will begin immediately.

------------additional information ------------

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

        * First chartered in 1766 as Queens College, Rutgers is
the eighth oldest institution of higher education in the United States.
From a colonial college with few students and a classic liberal arts
curriculum, Rutgers has evolved into a land-grant institution and
major public university. Today, as the state's only comprehensive
public research university, with campuses in northern, central, and
southern New Jersey, Rutgers is the flagship institution in New
Jersey's higher education system. In 1989, Rutgers was invited to
become a member of the prestigious American Association of
Universities (AAU).

       * Rutgers, offering a diverse instructional program of the
highest academic quality, is comprised of 29 degree-granting divisions:
12 exclusively undergraduate, 12 exclusively graduate, and five
which offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Five are
located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 16 in New Brunswick. The
university has approximately 48,000 students and more than 8,000
regular faculty and staff with an annual budget of approximately
$1.0 billion.

        * Rutgers is committed to becoming one of the great state
research universities of the nation. In June 1995, Rutgers adopted a
broad-ranging strategic plan entitled, A New Vision for Excellence,
that charts a course for the university through the first decade of the
new century. The plan outlines the responsibilities and challenges
that Rutgers faces as New Jersey's state university, it identifies
Rutgers' many existing strengths on which we should build, and it
commits Rutgers to the ambitious goal of moving into the very top
echelon of the nation's top-ranked public research universities by the
year 2010.

        * Rutgers has transformed itself to become a major
influence on regional and national levels. Rutgers' President Francis
L. Lawrence served on the New Jersey Governor's Panel to
Restructure Higher Education and on the Quality Education
Commission. He was the first elected chair of the forty-six
member New Jersey President's Council and served as a member of
the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education. On the national
level, Dr. Lawrence has been the president of the Association of
Graduate Schools of the Association of American Universities and
served on the board of directors of the Association of American
Colleges and Universities. He is currently a member of the Kellogg
Commission on the Future of State and Land-Grant Universities of
the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges;
the Association of American Universities Committee on the future of
Graduate Education; and the American Council on Education's
Commission on International Education.

Rutgers-Camden Campus

                * The Camden campus of Rutgers, The State
University of New Jersey, is known for a vibrant faculty committed
to the university's mission of teaching, research, and community
service. Our educators have earned national and international
attention for their work from such institutions as The White House,
The Hague, the United Nations, the Nobel Institute, the National
Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities,
Oxford University Press, Science magazine, Carnegie Hall, and the
National Institutes for Health. Faculty members are prolific authors
who publish works that receive such honors as the Anisfield-Wolf
Book Award and the Newcomen Prize from the Harvard Business
School. Other faculty members communicate their talents in
different fashions: for example, one is an internationally-renowned
performing artist who has recorded more than 50 compact discs of
classical music, while another has two nationally-syndicated radio
shows.

                * The true measure of Rutgers-Camden's success
lies in the achievements of our students and graduates. With the
support of a faculty dedicated to working closely with students and
graduates, Rutgers-Camden's graduates include two former New
Jersey governors; a Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice; the
current New Jersey Commerce and Economic Development
Commissioner; and a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper columnist.
More recently, students have graduated into choice positions with
such highly-competitive organizations as The Federal Reserve Bank
of Philadelphia, the United States Department of Justice, and Arthur
Andersen. Undergraduates enjoy entry into graduate programs at
such prestigious insititutions as Oxford, Yale, and the University of
Pennsylvania. An aggressive student life philosophy helps students
to secure jobs, scholarships, and internships, while also promoting
social activities and an overall sense of community.

        * Rutgers-Camden regularly applies its talents to a host of
challenges at home and abroad. Professors serve New Jersey, the
nation, and the world in a variety of capacities, such as lending their
talents to emerging democracies seeking to draft national and
regional constitutions; developing economic opportunities for New
Jersey with Latin American and southern African nations; defending
human rights across the globe; supporting small business owners in
southern New Jersey; and empowering the state's under represented
populations through numerous pro bono services.

Provost/Dean of the Graduate School-Camden

        *       The Provost/Dean of the Graduate School-Camden
serves as the chief academic officer of the Camden Campus and
will provide the vision and critical leadership necessary to move the
campus forward to realize the university's strategic plan. He or she
reports directly to the President and represents the campus as a
member of a small President's Cabinet comprised of senior
administrative officers.

        * The Provost/Dean provides the leadership for a campus
of about 5,000 students in five separate collegiate units: Camden
College of Arts and Sciences, University College, School of Business,
School of Law, and the Graduate School. He or she is responsible
for the overall campus budget, including financial aid, in excess of
$50 million.  There are nine professional programs in the five units;
all are accredited by the appropriate national agency. There are 26
baccalaureate programs, 12 masters, and one Juris Doctor program
on campus.

       * The Provost/Dean relates the campus mission in its urban
setting to the community, state, and beyond through a visible
commitment to teaching excellence and research, faculty
development, student recruitment, and fund raising.

Quality of Life

        * The quality of life in the New Jersey/Philadelphia area is
very good. Camden itself, while economically depressed, is
experiencing some significant development. A new state aquarium
on the waterfront welcomes visitors and significant housing
construction and renovation is taking place. Sony Corporation
recently opened an enormous amphitheater several blocks from the
campus, which hosts a world class concert series every summer.
The school is literally at the foot of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge,
making center city Philadelphia a five-minute ride from the campus
by car or on an excellent high speed subway line.

        * The New Jersey/Philadelphia metropolitan area is one of
the most livable major metropolitan regions in the country. Housing
is quite affordable, and the area boasts some of the finest public and
private schools, not to mention a staggering array of great restaurants,
museums, sporting events, parks, historic sites, beaches, theater,
and music. Midtown Manhattan and Washington, DC are less than
two hours away by train.
