The Human-Computer Interaction Lab at the University of Maryland
announces its 17th Annual Symposium & Open House and pre-symposium
workshops.

The tutorials and workshops, which will be held Thursday, June 1, will
feature topics including "Introduction to Human-Computer Interaction,"
"Introduction to Usability Testing," "Children as Our Technology Design
Partners," "On-Line Communities: Supporting Sociability and Designing
Usability," "Personal Photo Libraries: Innovative Designs," and "Interactive
Searching in Foreign-Language Collections."

The Symposium and Open House, on Friday, June 2, will include research
presentations on "Advanced Visual Interfaces" and "Learning Environments,"
as well as "Strategies for Promoting User-Centered Computing" and
"Transition to a New HCIL."  The Symposium will be followed by the Open
House demonstrations of the HCIL's newest research.

The registration cost for the Symposium is $170, including videotapes,
technical reports, handouts, and lunch.  Faculty and staff of academic
institutions may register for $100. Graduate and undergraduate students may
register, on a space-available basis and without materials
or lunch, at no cost.  If you are unable to attend and would like a
materials package, the fee will be $70.

Registration for Tutorials costs $120 (includes lunch, handout,
and reception).  Registration for the Workshops requires the permission of
the organizer and costs $70 if not registered for the Symposium,or $50 with
registration for the Symposium (includes lunch, handout,
and reception).

All paid registrants will receive 15% off the new book, Robots for
Kids: Exploring New Technologies for Learning, edited by Allison
Druin and James Hendler, which includes chapters by authors from around
the world disucssing how robots are being designed and used in
children's toys and learning systems.
