It should be noted, that a language virtual machine has two uses. The first
is as a fast means to port a compiler to new microprocessors. The second is
as a test-bed for microprocessor design. I believe that this second use will
have much greater long range significance. Therefore, because of the present
commercial situation, I strongly favor an enhanced J code machine. As for
which J code execution software engine, one obvious requirement is ease of
extending the instruction set using Ada.

As for XML, that should be discussed under Visual Ada. One should use XML
for GUI development coupled with Ada for program execution. One immediate
need is a standard means for HTML, XHTML, and XML pages to call Ada J code
programs. A second need is to have Ada J code interface with an Ada
executable. Package.Interfaces.Ada_to_Ada should be an interesting addition
and challenge.

I was the one that started a thread about Ada/JVM/Web. I found there
to be very little interest in forming a working group or in starting
a new mailing list. Most of the people responding to this issue wanted
to keep the discussion in Comp.Lang.Ada, so I've done nothing.

However, the AVM is certainly an interesting topic for a SIGAda
working group, especially if combined with Bob Lief's ideas about XML.
