SIGCHI Colleagues:

How should the SIGCHI Community honor and reward volunteer service to
SIGCHI?

REQUEST FOR COMMENT AND PROPOSALS

BACKGROUND:
SIGCHI depends on the efforts of numerous volunteers working at many levels
within the SIGCHI organization and CHI conferences: Volunteers hold elected
offices (SIGCHI Executive Committee), Chair conferences, Technical program
venues, develop the SIGCHI Web site, drive special initiatives (e.g., CHI
Kids, electronic publication, interactions journal), edit publications
(e.g., SIGCHI Bulletin). Currently volunteers are acknowledged at CHI
Conferences with placques and ribbons, and publication notices in the
SIGCHI Bulletin. Is this sufficient? What else should SIGCHI do,
consistent with its bylaws, non-profit status, etc.? Should awards differ
for different levels of contribution? What issues should SIGCHI be
sensitive to vis-a-vis industry, different cultures, etc.?

INVITATION:
The SIGCHI Executive Committee invites ideas and opinions from the SIGCHI
community on how to honor and reward volunteer efforts by members of the
SIGCHI community. Bob Mack, Vice Chair of Operations, has started an email
list called chi-Service-Awards, to collect opinions:

Please subscribe to this list by

ANOTHER INVITATION:
In addition Bob Mack invites participation in a short-term task force to
review these ideas and develop a proposal for consideration by the SIGCHI
Executive Committee in November. Please send a note to [log in to unmask]
stating your interest. Bob will select 10-12 participants, not including
former CHI Conference Chairs, or former EC members. Bob will organize a
conference call in October to develop a proposal, and present it to the EC
by end of 1998.

Thank you.

Bob Mack
