The principal anthropology conference (5000+ attendees, many tracks)
will follow CSCW 2002 (Nov 16-20) in the same hotel in New Orleans (Nov
20-24 -- actually the programs overlap one day). It is much less
expensive than ACM conferences. An opportunity to check it out.

Some AAA tracks:

(DIS)TRUST AND THE INTERNET
AT HOME IN TECHNOLOGY
PAPERS ON THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF WORK
POWERFUL GIS TOOLS TO ADVANCE SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL ANALYSIS
MAKING NEW THINGS (chaired by Lucy Suchman)]
MANY CAMERAS, MANY EYES
DISCOURSES AND TECHNOLOGIES OF COMMUNICATION AMONG...
TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATION
STRATEGIES FOR BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE
ANTHROPOLOGY AND INNOVATION IN THE HIGH-TECH SECTOR
LAND, INFORMATION AND BIOTECHNOLOGY
ETHNOGRAPHIES OF U.S. SUBURBS
USING MULTIMEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY SPACES TO INVESTIGATE DIVERSE IDENTITIES
EMERGENT TECHNOLOGIES AND THE PRODUCTION OF POLITICAL COMMUNITIES
MEDIA AND THE FUTURE OF ETHNOGRAPHY

In addition to these, there are far more sessions devoted to topics such
as globalization, education, and health care. Plus, many side interests
may be represented. If there are sessions with nothing of direct
interest going on, you could explore New Orleans (or look in on
something obscure, such as STUDIES IN THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF THE
UNGRASPABLE).

To find the AAA conference, go to the "Related Conferences" link on the
CSCW 2002 page, http://www.acm.org/cscw2002/

PS. If you sign up for both and want to stay at the Hyatt where they are
held, phone the Hyatt and say you are attending both, otherwise they
will tell you the hotel is fully reserved. Because AAA is so large
reserving a room early is a good idea. AAA also lists less expensive
hotels.
