THEME

In recent years HCI researchers have developed a broad range of interaction styles that diverge
from the "window, icon, menu, pointing device" (WIMP) paradigm and employ novel interaction
techniques and devices. These emerging interaction styles include virtual, mixed and augmented
reality as well as tangible interaction and interaction with pervasive and ubiquitous computing.
Developers of these next generation user interfaces currently face challenges that are not
addressed by state of the art user interface software tools. As part of the user interface software
community’s effort to address these challenges, the concept of a User Interface Description
Language (UIDL) is reemerging as a promising approach.

To date, the UIDL research area , which has its foundations in user interface management research
and model-based authoring,  has demonstrated promising progress with concrete, useful
development, mainly targeting multi-platform and multi-modal user interfaces. However, many
open questions remain regarding the usefulness and effectiveness of UIDLs in supporting the
development of next generation interfaces.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together user interface software researchers and interaction
designers in order to enable a two-way dialogue between tool builders and potential users of
these tools. In the workshop, discussions will focus on identifying key challenges facing this
community, developing new approaches aimed at solving these challenges and considering future
spaces for UIDL research.


SUBMISSIONS

 We invite interaction designers, computer scientists and user interface software researchers to
submit a 2-4 page position paper outline your interest in the workshop topic. Position papers are
encouraged to address the following themes:


    * Requirements for supporting the design and implementation of
      next generation  interfaces.
    * Characteristics and comparison of emerging interaction styles
      (e.g. TUIs, Mixed Reality, VR, Ubicomp).
    * Models for specifying the structure and behavior of next
      generation interfaces.
    * Architectural frameworks for emerging interaction styles.
    * Lessons learned from developing, using or evaluating specific UIDLs.


Papers will be peer-reviewed and 15-20 selected by relevance and likelihood of stimulating and
contributing to this discussion.

Participants will be notified of selection by 28 November 2007.

The workshop date is April 6th 2008 immediately before CHI 08 in Florence, Italy.
