User-Centered Computer Aided Language Learning

A book edited by:
Dr. Panayiotis Zaphiris, Centre for HCI Design,
City University, London, UK

Giorgos Zacharia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Overall Objectives of the Book
------------------------------
The objective of this book is to look at the topic of Computer Aided
Language Learning (CALL) in a new direction.

We will focus on the human-computer interaction elements of learning a
language online. The general goal of the book is to discuss the basis of
a broad framework for the development and management of CALL
environments, enriched with contributions from domains as diverse as
education, information systems, psychology, sociology, linguistics,
artificial intelligence, e-learning and many others. The book will put
the emphasis on the user (learner) and propose methodologies, strategies
and design approaches for designing interfaces that facilitate a
user-centered design approach and focus to CALL

The target audience
-------------------
University educators and educators in general; university
administrators; researchers; librarians, teachers of foreign languages,
e learning and CALL system managers and designers.

Recommended Topics
------------------
Recommended topics include but are not limited to the following

* Introduction: Introductory chapters to the topic of user-centred
design of CALL

* Analysis: Ethnographic (virtual, phase-to-phase) studies of CALL
courses; Requirement solicitation for CALL courses; Analysis of Social
and Cultural Perspectives of CALL; Development or use of novel analysis
methodologies for CALL; Analysing the social structure of CALL learning
communities.

* Design: Learning Theories for CALL (e.g. constructivism, behaviourism,
social constructionism) and how these can be linked to the design of
specific learning objects; Examples of successful user-centered designed
CALL courses; How to develop interfaces to facilitate different learning
styles for online CALL; Design of Educational Computer Platforms for
CALL; Design Scenarios for CALL

* Evaluation: Student support and assessment mechanism in the era of
networked CALL; Human Factors, Usability/Accessibility evaluation of
CALL; Evaluating the effect of design elements (e.g. multimedia) as
motivation factors in learning a foreign language online

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
--------------------
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before August
10, 2004, a 2-5 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission
and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals
will be notified by August 31, 2004 about the status of their proposals
and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected
to be submitted by November 15, 2004. All submitted chapters will be
reviewed on a blind review basis. The book is scheduled to be published
by Idea Group, Inc., publisher of the “Idea Group Publishing,”
“Information Science Publishing,” and “IRM Press” imprints in 2005.
