Cost-Justifying Usability

Budgets are tighter than ever these days so it's no longer enough to
justify usability as "the right thing to do". Therefore, we must be
prepared with financial arguments to justify our work. Join us for
insights on how to estimate the cost of a usability project, plus
ways to justify cost in terms of usability's financial and other
benefits.

Presenter Caroline Jarrett consults with large government and non-
profit organizations in the United Kingdom as they establish
usability groups. She has become fascinated by the challenge of
helping large organizations adopt user-centered design techniques.

Ms. Jarrett resides in the U.K. and also specializes in forms:
evaluating paper forms, design of paper and on-line forms, and
effective implementation of business processes that include forms.
She is the author of the 'Evaluation in Practice' and 'Usability in
Organizations' units
in the new Open University course "User Interface Design and
Development".

Take the PA Turnpike to exit 24, King of Prussia.
Just beyond the toll booths follow signs for Rt 202 south (toward
West Chester). Drive approx. 7 miles on 202 southbound.
Take Rt 29 north exit (Great Valley).
Bear right at exit ramp light onto Swedesford Rd.
Turn left at next light onto Valley Stream Pkwy.
Turn right into the first driveway marked with a small Siemens sign
(the sign is a white rectangular post, approximately 5 feet tall,
with Siemens written in small letters). If you get to a large Siemens
sign on a stone wall, make a U-turn and go to the previous entrance.
Follow the perimeter drive around to the right.
Watch for "Visitor Parking" sign.
Turn left into visitor parking row.
Check in with receptionist at "III" entrance at end of visitor
parking row.

Note: There are four buildings in the SMS Corporate complex. You are
going to the one known as Corp III. You are not going to the front
entrance (Corp 1) which is directly off Valley Stream Parkway.

Take Rt 202 north (toward King of Prussia).
Take Rt 29 north exit (the 2nd Rout 29 exit).
Take a right at the light at the end of the ramp.
Take a right at the next light onto Route 29 North.
Take a right at the first light onto Swedesford Road (Mobil and
Sunoco stations on the corner).
Take a left at the 2nd light onto Valley Stream Parkway.
Turn right into second driveway "First Union".
Follow the perimeter drive around a bend to left.
Watch for red "Visitor Parking" signs on left.
Turn left into visitor parking row.
Check in with receptionist at "III" entrance at end of visitor
parking row.
