Usability Engineering BOF/ Bay Area UPA Chapter on Tuesday, May 17,
at Google (1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Bldg. 40, Mountain View).

Registration starts at 7pm and our talk will begin at 7:30pm. Scott

BayCHI Usability Engineering BOF/ Bay Area UPA Chapter meeting announcement

Topic:  Wired for Speech: The Psychology and Design of Voice Interfaces

Speaker: Scott Brave, Ph.D, Baynote, Inc.

Interfaces that talk and listen are populating computers, cars, call
centers, and even home appliances and toys. Yet little is understood
about voice interfaces from a human-computer interaction perspective.
In this talk Scott will describe a series of psychological experiments
that answer such fundamental questions as:

- Do synthetic voices have gender and personality? 
- Can the voice of a car improve driving performance? 
- Is sounding like a human always good? 
- What type of microphones lead users to be most creative? 
- Should automated call centers apologize when they cannot understand
a customer?

The results are often counterintuitive and have implications for the
design not only of voice interfaces, but of human-computer interfaces
in general.

SCOTT BRAVE is principal scientist at Baynote, a venture-backed
startup focusing on advanced information discovery. Prior to joining
Baynote, Scott was a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of
Communication at Stanford University and served as lab manager for the
Communication between Humans and Interactive Media Lab (CHIMe). Scott
has published many articles and co-authored a new book titled Wired
for Speech: How Voice Activates and Advances the Human-Computer
Relationship (MIT Press).
