"Delivering User Experience"
by Dr. Steve Cousins
This forum is OPEN to the public.
ABSTRACT: User Experience is a much broader notion than User Interface,
encompassing traditional human-computer interaction, but also systems
issues. At one extreme, an autonomic system could provide a great user
experience by avoiding the user interface altogether. At another extreme,
the ergonomics of a physical device can make or break a user experience. In
this talk, I will give some case studies of research projects that
significantly impact the user experience, and talk about what it takes to
get such research out into the world.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr. Steve Cousins is the senior manager of the User
Experience Research (USER) group at IBM's Almaden research center in San
Jose. He came to Almaden from PARC, where he managed the Advanced Systems
Development lab and worked on delivering PARC's innovation to Xerox and the
world. Steve received his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University,
working on user interfaces for digital libraries. While at Stanford, he
consulted at Interval Research. Before moving to the west coast, Steve did
research in medical informatics at Washington University in St. Louis, where
he also received his BS and MS in Computer Science.
