Ekistics, one of the world's oldest scholarly journals for human habitat research and practice, was developed by C.A Doxiadis with the goal of creating liveable cities and thriving urban environments. The journal has provided an interdisciplinary forum for the integrated study of human settlements since the 1950s. It has recently been revived into an online version as Ekistics and the New Habitat (https://ekisticsjournal.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3394fda9c2399584a13dd8c6b&id=8165cf9eec&e=03facaa8c3) . The journal is planning a series of special issues for various regions of human habitation around the world. In this call, we seek papers on the topic of INDIA & JUGAAD - The Impact Of Innovation By The Resilient Indian Mind On Habitat

Until one lives in India and experiences the country fully immersed in its poverty, culture, generosity and wonder it is difficult to understand the complexity of the Indian mind and how over a billion people live within this democratic nation. The ability to face adversity with hope, to rise to challenges with bravery and to innovate with resilience while facing a scarcity of resources are some characteristics of the nation.

The innovative capability of the Indian mind has often been debated fiercely. The vernacular birth of Jugaad in India is derived from a colloquial Hindi word translates as an “innovative fix, an improvised solution born from ingenuity and cleverness.” It has been empowered for uplifting the Indian condition using what is available and then severely criticised for overshadowing innovation that should result in ‘affordable excellence’.

With the burgeoning growth of the population, there is a need to balance the above ideologies to serve the future of the urban impact on habitats in India. The possibility of merging both high technology solutions and solutions based on simpler methodologies of innovation would need to be explored and defined.

This Special Issue seeks papers from architecture, urban design and planning practitioners, academics and researchers which posit and analyse the value and implication of Jugaad in the context of the cities and new habitats of India. Research related to cutting edge studies in innovation process and methods; history and theory of Jugaad and innovative techniques in design and the built environment and urban planning are also welcome. In this regard, the following topics are suggested to take into consideration:
* Any aspect of the United Nations New Urban Agenda (https://ekisticsjournal.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3394fda9c2399584a13dd8c6b&id=2514712753&e=03facaa8c3) , including reference to the Sustainable Development Goals (https://ekisticsjournal.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3394fda9c2399584a13dd8c6b&id=c541c72ae5&e=03facaa8c3) .

* Critiques on the local, regional and global policy of habitat development, design and planning and urban transformation.

* Issues of architecture, urban design spatial planning, housing, conservation, sustainability, livability, social ingenuity, education, environmental planning and regenerations through a cross-disciplinary and/or global perspective.

We invite submissions engaged in the mentioned topics received initially in the format of a brief 200-word to 300-word outline for the proposed paper by the 1st November 2019. Successful proposals will then be invited to submit/upload a fully developed version of their paper to proceed to peer review.

Relevant prior papers from Ekistics and other sources, academics, researchers, practitioners as well as observers which posit and analyses the problems of cities and the new habitats in India in relation to Jugaad methodologies to planning and implementation of the six topics of UN-Habitat:
* Urban Demographics
* Land and Urban planning
* Environment and Urbanization
* Governance and Institutional
* Urban Economics
* Housing and Basic Services
