Research Hackathon, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

Please visit the hackathon website for further information:

The phrase 'self-harm' or 'self-injury' is used to describe when someone purposely causes harm to himself or herself, often as a response to emotional pain. It is thought that around 13% of young people self-harm, though it is speculated that this figure in reality is much higher. The development of digital technology that can support people who self-harm is a very under-developed area of research, despite the increasingly pervasive application of technology in other areas of health and wellbeing.
On the weekend of 16-17th April 2016 we are running a research hackathon in Newcastle upon Tyne with the theme of Creating Digital Experiences for Understanding Self-Harm. Participants will take part in a two day intensive digital design event, building prototypes and creating digital responses directed at the de-stigmatisation of the practice of self-harm, exploring the ways in which we can support those who self-harm and their social networks. This event is open to any interested participants, including developers, designers, researchers, healthcare professionals, public health practitioners, mental health activists, and anybody who is interested in digital mental health, wellbeing and technology. We aim to connect these groups in order to initiate a dialogue about how we can realise positive change in a mental health context through the use of technology.
The weekend will feature a number of talks by researchers and practitioners as well as people who have first-hand experiences of self-harm. We will provide typical hack and design event materials, resources and facilities including plenty of snacks and refreshments. We can also provide small travel bursaries to assist with participants' costs of attending. Places are limited so do please register to attend as soon as possible on the event website http://self-harmony.co.uk/ which has full details on speakers, location and programme.
