You have Users - You need User Centred Design!
Call for Participation

One-day Workshop (Tuesday 11 September) at IHM-HCI 2001, Lille, France,
September 10-14 2001

'Deploying User Centred Design across business sectors and application
media' -

Call for Position Papers

The advent of e-commerce on the world-wide web has exposed the value of
ease
of use to both suppliers and consumers. With increasing appreciation of
quality of use, we can anticipate growing intolerance of poor quality of
use
in all domains of human computer interaction.
User Centred Design (UCD) processes have been developed specifically to
deliver high quality of use. However, in applying UCD, practitioners must
make numerous choices as to what is sufficient and appropriate to achieve
effective 'User-Centredness' for their product. This workshop aims to
explore, share and develop criteria relating to user centredness of design,
and to examine how far these can be generalised and applied across
different
usage domains.

Workshop objectives:

The main objective of this workshop is to provide opportunities for active
practitioners of UCD to exchange and learn from each others' experiences in
the deployment of User Centred Design in order to identify and understand
differences in the application of UCD in different contexts of use. The
workshop will have up to 20 participants, which, it is hoped, will allow
everyone to contribute to in-depth discussion. Breakout sessions will be
convened to concentrate on key themes and to review the ways in which UCD
processes might be optimised for projects of varying size, type and
product.
Objectives include:

* To expand delegates' understanding of the User Centred Design standard:
What makes design user centred? What are the minimum requirements for and
criteria for UCD?

* To provide an opportunity for practitioners to compare, contrast and
learn
from one another's experience in the deployment of UCD.

* To discuss key themes, based on experience and case studies.

* To work together to set out some guidelines for improving best practise
in
UCD

Participation in the workshop:

People wishing to take part in the workshop are invited to express their
interest as soon as possible, and prepare short position papers to address
their own experiences and case histories of attempts to deploy user centred
design across any of a range of product types and usage requirements. These
might include, for example, e-commerce and other web sites, in-house
business software, commercial products, or mobile information and
communication technologies.

Position papers can be either short written papers (1000 words maximum) or
presentation material. These will be used as a basis of selection should
the
workshop be over-subscribed. Once accepted for the workshop, participants
may want to prepare additional presentation material, so that papers or
presentations can be pre-circulated to participants. A subset of these
will
be used to prime the breakout sessions and the emphasis will be on
discussion. Position papers should be submitted by July 10, to allow
selection in time for early registration for the conference (17 July).

Key themes are likely to be:
     * What makes design user centred? What are the minimum
requirements and criteria for user centred design?
     * How do we scale UCD practice to match differences of project
resource, budget and time scale while preserving the principles of user
centred design?
     * Do we need to adapt UCD practice to meet the needs of
products with differing technologies and, if so, how?
     * What are the constants and what are the variables in the
deployment of user centred design as we address consumer software;
e-business sites, tele-communications software, handheld devices.
* What characteristics of different marketplaces might lead to
differences in requirements for the modes and methods through which it is
applied?
     * Innovative approaches to improve effectiveness and
efficiency.
The workshop will have up to 20 participants, to allow everyone to
contribute to in-depth discussion.
Key dates
     1. Express interest as soon as possible
     2. Submit draft position papers, preferably in softcopy (Word,
pdf or rtf, or powerpoint format) by 10th July
     3. Initial selection before the conference early registration
deadline (17th July)
     4. Final participants register for workshop at the conference
site
     5. Minimum registration (at least 6 participants) required by
31st August at latest
