CALL FOR TECHNICAL NOTES, WORKSHOP PROPOSALS, STUDENT VOLUNTEERS
            http://www.ubicomp.org --- UBICOMP 2001
        September 30 - October 2, 2001, Atlanta, GA USA

Technical notes at UBICOMP 2001 offer an opportunity to publish
research that is more late-breaking in nature. The submissions
(not longer than 3000 words) will be reviewed and accepted papers
will be included in the proceedings together with the full papers.
The proceedings will be published by Springer and also made
available online through the ACM digital library. The submission
deadline for technical notes is May 25th.

Sunday, September 30 has been reserved for special purpose workshops.
If you wish to organize a workshop, then you should submit a proposal
directly to Anind Dey ([log in to unmask]) by May 25, 2001. Please
check out the website (http://ubicomp.org/ubicomp/aa.html) for
more information.

We are looking also for about 10-14 Student Volunteers. The form
to request to become an SV can be found off the page:
http://www.ubicomp.org/ubicomp/sv.html. Applications will be
accepted until July 31st. We will randomly select Student Volunteers
and contact everyone who applied by August 3rd so people can arrange
to buy cheap plane tickets. Benefits for becoming an SV include:
conference registration, help with hotel cost, and more.

UBICOMP 2001, the next conference in the series formerly called
Handheld and Ubiquitous Computing (HUC), aims to be the premier
forum for presentation of research results in all areas relating
to the design, implementation, application and evaluation of
ubiquitous computing technologies. It will bring together research
practitioners in all disciplines developing the new paradigm of
computing off-the-desktop that moves towards the notion of a
disappearing or invisible computer.

Themes
UBICOMP 2001 is attempting to unite the different research communities
that have been doing work in the general area of ubiquitous computing.
The technical program, therefore, will address all issues related to
ubiquitous, pervasive, invisible and wearable computing, including:

-) Applications of ubiquitous computing in everyday environments (e.g.,
office, home, mobile) or more task-focused domains (e.g., maintenance
and repair, training)

-) Techniques and research issues for off-the-desktop interaction
styles, including both input (e.g., recognition-based pen, voice) and
output (e.g., ambient displays)

-) Mobile, handheld, wireless and wearable technologies and devices,
such as information appliances

-) Context-aware computing

-) Automated capture of live experiences

-) Middleware and distributed computing issues for ubiquitous
computing, including wireless technologies

-) Intelligent, aware or attentive environments

-) Perception and modeling of the environment, including sensing
devices and techniques

-) Evaluation and other non-technology specific aspects of ubiquitous
computing, including social implications

Important Dates
May 25, 2001: Technical Notes (3000 word limit)
May 25, 2001: 1/2 day or full day workshop proposals
  July 31,2001: Student volunteers application

Technical notes will have options for presenting in
poster or demonstration or short talk format.

All submissions will be required in electronic format available
through the conference Web site (http://www.ubicomp.org). The Web
site will also contain additional information and advice for authors.

Organizers
General Chair: Gregory D. Abowd, Georgia Tech
Program Chair: Steve Shafer, Microsoft Research
Workshops and Technical Notes Chair: Anind K. Dey, Georgia Tech

Sponsors
We are currently pursuing cooperative affiliations with ACM SIGCHI,
