Caring technology for the future
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics 2010 (ECCE2010) is the
annual conference of the European Association of Cognitive Ergonomics
(EACE). This year, for the first time, the main conference will be
preceded by a day of workshops. The workshops aim to provide an
opportunity for researchers and practitioners with similar interests
to exchange new ideas and practical experience in their specific areas
of cognitive ergonomics. By presenting, discussing, and reporting
innovative research or ideas, workshop participants will explore these
research areas with the aim of developing and enhancing the
relationship between cognitive sciences and technical information
processing system developments.
IMPORTANT DATES
1 APRL DEADLINE REGULAR SHORT/LONG PAPERS FOR ECCE CONFERENCE

24 August 2010 Workshop
THE WORKSHOPS TOPICS
*Cognitive Engineering for Technology in Mental Health Care and
Rehabilatation
The use of technology, such as virtual reality, electronic diaries,
multimedia, brain computing and computer games, to support the care
and rehabilitation of patients affected by mental disorders is a
relatively new and advancing research area. In this workshop,
researchers, developers and mental health professionals will present
and discuss their latest work, with a focus on cognitive, emotional
and ergonomic aspects on issues as acceptance, usage, experience and
accessibility of these innovative technologies.

*Towards an ergonomic mammography: rethinking the acquisition process
Breast cancer is the major cause of cancer-related deaths among the
female population. Mammography is currently the best technique for
reliable detection of early, non-palpable, potentially curable breast
cancer. A considerable percent of women avoid doing regular
mammography exam due to pain and discomfort caused by the strong
compression over the breast. Other studies mention that forceful
compression of the breast may rupture small blood vessels and
encourage distant spread of undetected cancers. However, few studies
are focusing on improving the comfort for women during examination.
The main motivation of the workshop is to reduce/eliminate pain for
women during mammographic exam. We believe that rethinking the
acquisition process can lead towards an ergonomic mammography to
promote comfort and protection for women. The aim of the workshop is
to evaluate the state-of-the-art in mammography from the point of
women’s health perspective, to rethink the mammography acquisition
process and to establish a research proposal.

*Putting users’ first : the importance of human-centred design in the
development of mobile applications and services
The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers interested
in exploring the state of the art research in relation to human
factors aspects of mobile application and service design. The workshop
format will allow each member to present a short paper on their
current work and open this up to general discussion afterwards. The
overall aim of the workshop will be to put forward the contents and
structure for an edited book on this topic with contributions from the
workshop participant

*Robots That Care
Many countries face pressure on their health care systems. To
alleviate this pressure, ‘self care’ is often stimulated with the use
of new, assistive technologies. Social robotics is a research area
where robotic technology is optimized for various social functions.
One of these functions is self care assistance. To foster progress in
this area of ‘social robotics for self care’, coordinated efforts
between research institutes, companies and end users are needed. This
workshop focuses on bringing these stakeholders together and creating
a shared research agenda.

*Eye-Tracking = Reading the Mind
Eye activity measures are utilized to make inferences about human
activity. While much is known how to use the eye to infer workload,
less is known about inferring higher-level cognitive processes from
lower-level eye movements. The main question addressed in the workshop
is how to use eye activity measures in order to support higher-level
cognitive processes. The workshop mainly serves to establish an
international special interest group interested in making research
proposals about the above-mentioned topic. The workshop entails a full
day using the morning to establish a short overview of the state-of-
the-art in eye activity measures and applications. The afternoon will
be used to form consortia and generate research proposal ideas. People
interested are required to shortly motivate their attendance by
describing their research interest, experience, and a visionary
statement that identifies knowledge gaps and possible approaches to
bridge them (max. 500 words).

*3D Quality of Experience : A Workshop on the Human Factors of
Stereoscopic Displays
At what appears to be a turning point in the public acceptance and
commercial viability of stereoscopic 3D entertainment, the human
factors community has to face a number of challenges with regard to
the effects of stereoscopic displays, and methods of assessing such
effects. We propose a one-day workshop to provide an overview of the
state-of-the-art of human factors insights in this area, and define an
agenda for future research. The workshop will be split into two
distinct parts. During the morning session, we aim for invited talks
by 3-4 leading scholars, who are asked to provide an overview of the
field of human factors of stereoscopic displays. During the afternoon
session, we will have a number of talks that were selected from an
open submission process. For this purpose, a call for papers will be
published inviting scholars to submit their most recent and most
innovative empirical results in the area of human factors of
stereoscopic displays.
