Healthcare Systems Off the Ward Minitrack
    Technology in Health Care Track

    January 5-8, 2009?
Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort, Big Island, Hawaii??

Conference website: ?
Minitrack website:

There is an ongoing and accelerating move to provide medical healthcare outside of traditional healthcare settings, both for reasons of financial expediency (reducing visits to hospital and primary care physicians and facilitating earlier discharge) and improving patients’ quality of life. One of the most radical shifts that has happened can be seen in the deployment of small mobile and/ or wearable medical devices that can be operated by users and home-based carers, although with variations in the extent of device and therapeutic management across users and medical practitioners. Some of these involve complex data interpretation and physical placement which makes their design and organizational deployment particularly interesting and problematic.

This move away from the hospital as a site for operating medical technology has a huge number of implications around how best to achieve this radical change to the use of medical devices, ranging from the design of device interfaces to the training of users to make effective use of the technology. We are seeking novel papers in this increasingly important area of healthcare provision.

TOPICS INCLUDE (but are not limited to):
‘Off the ward’ technologies (mobile, wearable, ambient home-based):
        Interaction design,
        Context of use,
        Data representation design issues,
Accommodating the diversity of users and their specific needs.
Use of ‘Off the ward’ technologies:
        Software services for ubiquitous healthcare,
        Mobile and home-based healthcare monitoring,
        Chronic disease management.
Organizational issues related to the ‘Off the ward’ healthcare:
        User needs,
        Information management;
Stakeholders and service design:
        Dealing with diverse stakeholders,
Planning for and managing remote service provision.

Prospective authors may contact any of the Minitrack Chairs (see below)?to discuss topics or get feedback on an abstract.
