Track on Communities and New Forms of Organizations
http://www.ecis2006.se/02_conferencetracks/commandnevforg.html

The concept of communities has experienced enormous attention from
different disciplines within organization and management studies. Within
the IS discipline, this attention evolved in studies related to IT
support of communities of practice, e-learning communities, communities
to enhance online professional problem solving, to support consumer
knowledge sharing, to support open source software design, etc. Usually,
communities are portrayed as creating opportunities for new forms of
organizing. As is typically the case with concepts within early stages
of their life cycle, past and present research on communities tends to
be overly optimistic and lack a strong theoretical background. Now that
the discussion on communities as informal networks creating new
organizational forms is maturing, it is time to spend more attention on
theories and more problematic aspects. This track aims to bring forward
interdisciplinary research that enables more in-depth discussions about
the possibilities, limitations and unintended consequences of
communities as new forms of organizing. We invite both empirical as well
as conceptual research.

Possible topics include (but are not limited to):

    * Communities embedded in hierarchies
    * The possibilities and limits of communities for open innovation
    * The limits and challenges of designing communities.
    * Communities and power relations
    * Communities in relation to practice based theories (e.g. ANT,
      Social Worlds Theory, Activity theory, Structuration theory)
    * Communities and the role of social and physical proximity
    * The role of leadership in communities
    * Communities and cross-boundary issues

Track Chairs:
MARLEEN HUYSMAN, VRIJE UNIVERSITEIT AMSTERDAM
VOLKER WULF, UNIVERSITY OF SIEGEN and FRAUNHOFER FIT
VOLKMAR PIPEK, INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR SOCIO-INFORMATICS (IISI)
