TUTORIAL ON "THE DISAPPEARING COMPUTER" at NordiCHI 2006, OSLO, NORWAY
NordiCHI is the main Nordic forum for human-computer interaction research.
It represents the meeting place for researchers from academia and industry,
designers, practitioners, educators and others from a broad range of
traditions and communities.
NordiCHI is a biannual conference which has earlier been held in
Stockholm (2000),
Århus (2002) and Tampere (2004).
This year, NordiCHI 2006 will be held in Oslo, Norway, from October 14 -
18, 2006
with the pre-conference events (workshops, tutorials, doctoral colloquium)
being held on October 14 and 15, 2006.

Part of the tutorial programme is Tutorial T4:
The Disappearing Computer: Designing Interaction for Smart Artefacts
Dr. Dr. Norbert A. Streitz
Fraunhofer IPSI, Darmstadt, Germany
Intended audience
Both practitioners and researchers at beginners to intermediate level
GOALS
The goal of this tutorial is to make researchers and practitioners aware
of the
implications for interaction design that are caused by the increasing
trend of
embedding computation in everyday objects creating so called smart
artifacts and
smart environments. Attendees will gain an overall understanding of the
basic
principles of designing for ubiquitous and pervasive computing and ambient
intelligence, and learn about examples from different applications domains
(office, home, public spaces, games and entertainment). While
"disappearance"
is a major aspect, smart artifacts are also characterized by the use of
sensors
collecting data about the environment, the devices and humans acting in this
context. This combination creates a new set of issues for interaction
design as,
e.g., privacy aspects. Tutorial attendees will learn about the
state-of-the-art
in this area and obtain information that will allow them to realize the full
potential of this new field in their current and future work.

INSTRUCTOR
Dr. rer. nat. Dr. phil. Norbert Streitz (Ph. D. in physics and Ph.D. in
psychology)
is a Senior Scientist and Strategic Advisor with more than 20 years of
experience in
information and communication technology. In 1997, he initiated and then
managed the
research division "AMBIENTE - Smart Environments of the Future" at the
Fraunhofer
institute IPSI in Darmstadt, Germany, where he also teaches at the
Department of
Computer Science of the Technical University Darmstadt. He has
published/edited
16 books and (co)authored more than 100 technical papers. He was the
Chair of the
Steering Group of the EU-funded research initiative "The Disappearing
Computer"
and was/is involved in many other EU-funded projects and efforts. He is
now the
co-chair of the recently established ERCIM Working Group "Smart Environments
and Systems for Ambient Intelligence (SESAMI)".
