CALL FOR PAPERS

IEEE Virtual Reality 2009 Workshop
Towards Adaptation and Personalization in 3D User Interfaces
to Enhance User Interaction and Accessibility (AP-3DUI)

March 14th, 2009
Lafayette, Louisiana, USA
http://www.edm.uhasselt.be/ap-3dui2009/
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Improving 3D User Interaction (3DUIs) is actively researched, yet
desirable interaction levels have not been achieved. A part of this can
be attributed to existing interface inflexibility with behaviors
invariant of the factors of the individual user, their preferences or
their tasks, which affect performance. Some example factors, which play
a larger role in 3DUIs as compared to 2DUIs, are user arm length, user
height, handedness, eye dominance, color differentiation, technique
preferences, task approaches, computer and game experience,
accessibility issues, cybersickness, susceptibility to fatigue, spatial
aptitudes and other cognitive factors to name a few. As the physical,
mental and experiential factors of users that influence 3DUIs are
diverse, 3DUIs designed to be optimal for all users result in
interaction optimal for no single user. Adaptation and personalization
are envisioned to play an important role in the next generation of user
interfaces.

To achieve adaptation and personalization, existing approaches in
several research communities are of significant interest. Intelligent
interfaces that take advantage of context and assist in user tasks have
been actively researched. Multimodal approaches incorporate multiple
input modalities for user interaction. Incorporating influential factors
or allowing users to tailor the interface based on their preferences
improves their performance on tasks. Addressing accessibility issues
remove interface obstacles for disadvantaged users. Systematic
incorporation of these approaches will clearly improve 3DUIs in terms of
performance, subjectivity and access.

Within the domain of this workshop, the following topics in 3D user
interfaces include, but are not limited to:

   * Application areas for adaptive and personalized interaction
   * Intelligent user interfaces
   * Adaptive 3D interaction techniques
   * Adaptation of Multimodal Feedback
   * Personalized interaction
   * User modeling and Adaptation
   * User diversity in VR applications
   * Universal access interfaces
   * Authoring approaches to adaptive and personalized 3DUIs
   * Effects of gaming and experience in 3DUIs
