Have you used an interesting browsing application lately? Perhaps
you're into visualization and you believe that a fancy presentation
can make those timeless navigation problems ( where am I? how did I
get here? what can I do here? where can I go next? ) a little less
problematic. Or maybe you're the kind of person who thinks ten nimble
fingers and a Korn shell ( cd !2$^\^b RETURN ) are the fastest way out
of any navigation problem. Regardless, if you design browsers, build
browsers, test browsers, or just use browsers... have we got a panel
for you.

The Great CHI'97 Browse-Off will bring together several state-of-the-
art structure visualization and browsing tools in an entertaining yet
informative "live" comparison. Users of each system will compete "head-
to-head" before the audience in a series of "races" to complete a common
set of benchmark browsing tasks within the same information space. The
format is designed to simulate the stressful conditions under which
real world browsing often takes place while providing the audience with
an opportunity to make direct comparisons between systems. Attendees
will be able to see for themselves what each system can do in the hands
of an experienced operator.

This is your invitation to help advance the state of the art in one of
the crucial technologies of the Information Age. You will compete for
fame and prizes using the browsing technology of your choice. Entries must
satisfy only the following requirements:

   - The hardware platform must be Macintosh or Windows'95, OR the
entire set-up will need to be provided by the contestant.

   - The software can be anything from an advanced research project to
an off-the-shelf browsing tool or even a standard platform
technology such as the Macintosh Finder or Windows Explorer.

   - Anything that can read a filesystem or an HTML web should work
fine. An ASCII format will also be provided for those needing
to read the information space into an internal data structure.

   - The exact navigation tasks will not be disclosed in advance.
Contestants will know the general form of the information space
( a deep, bushy, hierarchy, possibly with some cross-links )
but the final content will be a secret until race day.

   - Teams will consist of two expert users, with one serving as
"driver" ( who will actually operate the system ) and the other
as "navigator" ( who will call out directions and manage the
     list of targets ).

   - Entries must be sumbitted using a standard form ( see below ),
and must be received by February 1, 1997 to be considered.
Interested parties are encouraged to contact the organizers for
     assistance and advice.
