Second ESP Graduate Student Workshop

Call For Submissions
The Empirical Studies of Programmers (ESP) workshop is the premier forum in
North America for the presentation of both field and laboratory studies of
programmers. The 1999 workshop (ESP 8) will be held on October 22-24, 1999.
In association with ESP 8, we are pleased to announce the second ESP
Graduate Student Workshop. The workshop is open to any graduate student
(MS or PhD) pursuing a degree in a topic related to ESP. This workshop will
provide students with an opportunity to discuss issues related to ESP, to
present their ideas for thesis/dissertation topics, and to report and
discuss preliminary results in a non-threatening environment with other
students and a faculty mentor. It will also provide an opportunity to
socialize and share ideas with other students who are working in related
Each attendee will be expected to write a paper related to their research,
and to present it to the rest of the group. After the graduate workshop,
participants can get additional feedback from ESP researchers at a poster
session during the ESP 8 opening reception on Friday night. The papers from
the graduate student workshop will be collected into a proceedings that
will be distributed to all ESP 8 participants.
Students at all points in the thesis/dissertation process are encouraged to
participate. A light reviewing/refereeing process will take place. Authors
who have achieved significant results are encouraged to also submit papers
to the ESP 8 workshop.
THE DATE AND PLACE
The graduate student workshop will begin Friday morning, Oct. 22, and will
continue through the opening reception for the ESP 8 workshop that evening.
Both workshops will be held at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Old Town
Alexandria, VA. Students are encouraged to stay and attend ESP 8.
SUBMISSIONS DUE MAY 1
If you are interested in participating in this workshop, please prepare a
one-page abstract discussing your research topic, the status of your work
including any preliminary results, and any issues or questions that you are
currently encountering. Before May 1, please email the abstract to:

The deadline for submission of full papers will be August 1. Additional
