The Doctoral Consortium at IDC is intended to provide an opportunity
for Ph.D. students to share and discuss their research with peers and
panellists (faculty mentors). The Consortium will begin with a meal in
the evening of the 4th June and this will be followed by an all day
academic session on 5th June (Tuesday).

At the Consortium, students will give short presentations of their
current progress and will have this work discussed by the participants
and panellists. Subjects to be covered in the presentations will
include: a statement of the problem and research question(s),
literature review, theory development and/or experimental work,
research methodology and preliminary findings, if any. In addition to
the formal sharing the Consortium will include some instruction and
informal discussion.

We anticipate inviting between 6 and 8 doctoral students but this will
depend on the quality of the submissions and the resources available at
the conference. In the event that the number of suitable participants
significantly exceeds the places available, preference will be given to
those students that seem most likely to benefit from the event. Student
participants will have their abstracts published in the Conference
proceedings and will be required to display a poster of their work
during the conference. Applicants who are selected will receive
complimentary conference registration, and may also be offered partial
reimbursement of travel and accommodation (the amount of reimbursement
is still to be finalised).

Applying to the Doctoral Consortium

Applicants should prepare:

an extended abstract of their work in the conference format that
describes their research. This should be no more than four pages and
should include
the problem(s) that the research is addressing; the research question
(s) that are being considered.
the expected contribution(s) of the research to the IDC field.
the work done to date
the essential literature
a single page word document that briefly describes the applicant and
makes a case for attendance at the Doctoral Consortium.
a letter of recommendation from the student's primary research
supervisor (this can be sent separately, if desired), and
an estimate of expenses (this will not be considered during the
assessment process, it will be used to attract sponsors).
Review Criteria

Doctoral Consortium submissions will be judged on the following
criteria:

Originality of the work with respect to current concepts and
techniques.
Importance of the work with respect to fundamental issues and themes
in Interaction Design and Children.
Rigor and validity of claims, argumentation, methodology, results, and
interpretations.
Participants in the consortium will be selected by the Doctoral
Consortium Committee (Chair and Panellists). The review process will
retain the anonymity of reviewers.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality of submissions is maintained during the review
process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in
perpetuity.
