17 March 2019, Tempe, AZ, USA

http://tei.acm.org/2019/

TEI’19 will host a Graduate Student Consortium aimed at junior researchers currently pursuing a Ph.D. in an area relevant for the Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction community. Traditionally the TEI GSC is focused on meeting other TEI Ph.D. students as well as more experienced TEI researchers to share experiences and sharpen the research. If you are interested in joining, please find out how you can participate below, and online at http://tei.acm.org/2019/participate/graduate_student_consortium.html

IMPORTANT DATES
• 9 November 2018 12PM PST: GSC Submissions
• 6 December 2018: Author notifications
• 9 January 2019: Camera-ready submissions
• 17 March (Sunday) 2019: Graduate Student Consortium, Tempe, AZ, USA

All deadlines: 23:59h PST, no extensions possible.

CALL
The TEI’19 GSC consists of two activities. The main event is a one-day session on Sunday 17 March 2019, during which TEI Ph.D. students present their work to, and discuss their work with each other and a panel of experienced TEI researchers. During this Sunday program the key purpose is to have an informal and interactive discussion about each candidates’ ongoing research, with the intention to sharpen it. In addition to the Sunday session we will be organising informal (lunch) meetings between individual TEI GSC participants and senior TEI researchers for additional one-on-one coaching.

GSC applicants may be at various stages of their Ph.D. research, however they should have a clear understanding of their driving research question, their research approach including preliminary research design and methodology(s) as well as a goal for what they hope to gain by attending the GSC session and one-on-one event.

SUBMISSIONS
Each applicant should provide a short written paper (four pages in ACM SIGCHI Papers and Notes format: https://sigchi.org/templates/) describing his or her ongoing research and submit it via email to: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

The paper should clearly describe the research topic, covering the context and motivation, objectives and central research questions. Also we require a concise background description a/o literature review framing the research, a description and rationale of the approach to research design and methodology and an overview of data collection and analysis methods. If possible and suitable, please also include description of pilot, preliminary or selected results framed in the context of research questions. Finally, the paper should provide a brief timeline that gives insight into the activities done so far as well as in activities planned for the remainder of the Ph.D. research. Please mention the amount of time left.

In addition to this 4-page paper we ask you to include a separate one-page (~500 word) motivation explaining how participating in the TEI’19 GSC will benefit your research.

Please note that submissions to the GSC are not anonymous. Submissions will be reviewed by the GSC chairs, and if necessary by additional senior researchers from the TEI field. Confidentiality of submissions will be maintained during the review process and all rejected submissions will be kept confidential. The GSC chairs will make the final participant selection.

Accepted GSC papers will be published in the TEI Proceedings and in the ACM Digital Library.

GSC ACTIVITIES
The main GSC panel will be held on Sunday March 17th 2019. The day will start with a welcome and introduction by the GSC chairs. Then each Ph.D. student will have 15 minutes to present and 25 minutes for a group discussion about their work. The day will end with a general discussion, wrap-up, and dinner. In the remaining days of the conference (18 – 20 March 2019) we try to bring each GSC candidate into contact with one or two senior TEI researchers, preferably from the same or similar field of interest, for additional (lunch) feedback.

At this moment there is no information yet about potential funding for GSC-attendees, but it will be posted on this website as soon as we know more.
