You're invited to participate in an eLearning Special Interest Group at the
CHI 2001 Conference in Seattle

on Tuesday, April 3, 2001, 2:30-4:00 p.m.

organized by:
Lisa Neal, EDS
Ken Korman, ACM

eLearning has experienced phenomenal growth in recent times, cutting across
all sectors of society on a global scale. Those seeking to develop
eLearning courses and programs must confront a variety of complex issues
regarding planning, design, and implementation, as well as issues around
selection and use of technologies.

In the SIG, we propose to examine the following:

h What makes an eLearning technology effective under what circumstances?
h Can the design of current tools be improved from the perspective of
teachers and students?
h What are the factors influencing the design and delivery of a rich and
compelling eLearning experience?
h How has eLearning been used to teach HCI and what are the particular
issues around teaching HCI effectively at a distance?

All these questions tie-in closely with usability issues at the core of HCI
research and theory. We welcome the eLearning and CHI communities to
participate and to strengthen ties between practitioners in the two related

We will start by asking participants to identify themselves and state the
major issues impacting them. We will then organize brief discussions around
the topics on which there is the most consensus. We will document the
discussion for publication in ACM's new online publication, eLearn magazine.
The organizers are Editor-in-Chief and Executive Editor, respectively, of
eLearn magazine.
