CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
..................................................................................

1 Day Workshop: "TANGIBLE INTERFACES FOR COLLABORATION"

at E-CSCW 2005, the European Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work,
Paris, September 2005,
The workshop will take place on Sunday the 18th Sept. 2005

Organisers: Eva Hornecker, Mark Stringer, Albrecht Schmidt, Brygg Ullmer

THE WORKSHOP THEME

How can tangible interfaces and tangible interaction augment and foster collaboration? Even
though collaboration support might be the most important, domain-independent feature of TUIs,
this issue has until recently attracted little explicit attention and has been rarely focused on in
conceptual work.

This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working on questions such as
the support of local and remote collaboration in work, learning, everyday life, and entertainment
with tangible interfaces. Contributions on technologies, applications, empirical studies, concepts,
and models are invited. We particularly encourage sharing early research results and inspiring
ideas.

Topics
    * Practical experiences with tangible user interfaces in CSCW and CSCL
    * Empirical studies on the (collaborative) use of tangible user interfaces
    * Knowledge transfer from collaboration in physical settings
    * Tangible support of face-to-face collaboration
    * Tangible interaction for mobile users, remote or asynchronous collaboration
    * Models, metaphors, user interface concepts, and design knowledge
    * Problems and challenges encountered

SUBMISSION DETAILS

We will consider three types of submission
    * research notes (up to 2400 words)
    * position statements (up to 800 words)
    * research questions (up to 400 words).

Research notes report novel findings. In a position statement authors express their view on
tangible interfaces, share ideas, or present controversial issues. In research questions authors can
suggest topics they would like to see addressed in the workshop or propose as future research
direction.

Submissions in PDF will be handled electronically (mail submission to all organisers, details on
website). All workshop contributions will be published on the workshop web site. Additionally, we
will consider organizing a journal special issue on the workshop's topic (depending on the quality
of submissions).

GOALS AND EXPECTED PARTICIPANTS

The workshop aims to foster a community in the area of tangible interfaces for collaboration.
It will provide opportunity for extensive discussion, aiming toward identifying the state of research
and fruitful research directions. A number of short talks will be selected from submitted research
notes.

We aim to bring together researchers, students, and practitioners working on tangible interfaces
and tangible interaction. In particular we hope for participants with different backgrounds and
perspectives, e.g. from computer science, design, psychology, social science, and HCI. The
number of participants will be limited to ca. 20. Participants will be selected based on their
submission through a review process.

TIME LINE

Deadline for submissions: 20. June
