"USER-CENTERED DESIGN WORKS" (2006 Edition)

A Multimedia Resource for HCI Professionals and Teachers

Now in its fourth year of publication, User-Centered Design Works ("UCD Works") has become an established resource of theory, case studies and success stories of user-centered design and usability. The publication helps HCI professionals to create or improve the appreciation of user-centered design, user experience, usability engineering and testing within their own or their client's organization. It has also proven to be a valuable resource for HCI researchers and teachers of HCI courses in universities and colleges.

The publication and maintenance of UCD Works is supported by the "Innovation-Oriented Program on Human-Machine Interaction", an initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs that aims at strengthening UCD in industry by funding knowledge development (through academic research) and dissemination.

UCD Works covers the following topics:

- Theory of product design, product improvement, UCD versus marketing, and the role of the user in requirements analysis and product evaluation.

- Principles and benefits of UCD.

- Case studies and success stories illustrating the value (including the return on investment) of UCD in the design of software applications, web sites, professional systems and consumer products.

- HCI resources: an overview of relevant journals, societies, web sites and conferences.

The first edition of UCD Works was published as a CD in 2002 and has since been put to use by more than 1500 HCI professionals and teachers. We are currently preparing the 2006 edition, with a larger collection of cases and success stories, to be published on a dedicated UCD Works website. A beta version of the new site will be unveiled at the CHI 2006 conference in Montreal, Canada, April 24-27.

Submit your success story!

We are inviting HCI professionals, in particular those working in commercial companies, consultancy and design firms, to submit cases for inclusion in UCD Works. Having your case included in UCD Works not only allows you to make a valuable contribution to your own profession, it also generates international exposure for your company and its expertise.

In order to have your case considered for inclusion in UCD Works, please send an abstract by email to Lucas Noldus ([log in to unmask]) according to the following guidelines:

- Provide the following information: situation prior to project, intended users of product or service, UCD approach applied, methods and techniques used, final product, test procedure, benefits, return on investment, conclusions. The take-home message of the case should be: UCD led to a better product or service. Also mention the client (for whom the development was carried out, if applicable) and the developer (company who carried out the work).

- Text should be in English.

- Deadline for submission: May 15, 2006.

Abstracts will be reviewed by the editorial committee. Upon acceptance of your abstract, you will receive guidelines for the preparation of the complete case to be published in UCD Works.

Meet us at CHI 2006

During the CHI 2006 conference in Montreal, Canada (April 24-27), we will be available to discuss abstracts with authors and advise on how to prepare a complete case, or to provide additional information. The beta version of the UCD Works website will be on display continuously in booth G-H in the exhibition area.

- If you are a usability engineer, tester, designer or consultant: please stop by to discuss how your work can be featured in UCD Works.

- If you are a teacher: come over to discuss how UCD Works can be put to use in your classes.

We look forward to interacting with current and prospective users of UCD Works, to get feedback on the current edition and to gather interesting cases for the next.

On behalf of IOP Human-Machine Interaction,
with kind regards,

UCD Works editorial committee
