Are there topics that you would like to see discussed by a panel of experts
at the CHI conference next April in The Hague?

Unlike previous years, this year you can propose topics for panels without
having to locate and invite all the panelists in advance.

We're particularly looking for topics that might help newcomers to the CHI
community to understand some core issues, topics that may have been
neglected in the past, topics whose future importance may not yet be
recognised as well as topics that despite many years of debate still don't
seem to have been resolved.

If you have any ideas within these or any other categories, please do
contact us for advice about putting together a panels proposal
([log in to unmask]).

All that we ask is that you know something about the topic you're proposing
and have a sense of what the different opinions are that need to be seen in
debate. If you know some potential panelists already and know that they are
keen to participate then that is great, but it isn't essential. If the
topic is right, we will assign someone to help you organize the panel and
find panelists.

Full details of the changes and of this year's procedures can be found at
http://www.acm.org/sigchi/chi2000/call/categories/panels.html but here is a
brief summary...

For CHI2000 there will be a two-step review process. The first review will
address the organizer's vision for the panel and the second step will review
the panel's feasibility.

Vision Review. This will assess the panel's importance to the HCI community
and its relevance to the CHI 2000 theme. These reviews will be used to
identify the most interesting and thought-provoking panel concepts.

Feasibility Review. A member of the Panels review committee will be assigned
to each panel to work with the organizer to further develop the vision (if
necessary) as well as confirm the identity and commitment of the panelists.

Submissions for CHI 2000 Panels must include a one-page description and
further information of up to two pages.

Description
This one-page document should make clear the vision, the intended audience,
and the controversial aspects of the issue and its relevance to HCI and to
the CHI 2000 theme. This description is used for the Vision Review.

Additional Information
Up to two additional pages describing likely panelists (providing names and
contact information where appropriate), the planned format for audience
participation, and any other information which may help the review committee
evaluate the vision.

We're looking forward to hearing from you,

David Gilmore and Jean Scholtz
