Call for papers - Internet of Things marries Social Media | Workshop at Mobile HCI 2011, 30th of August, Stockholm, Sweden.

What happens when non-human objects enter social media and begin to imitate social relations with people? Starting from a social networking stance towards connected objects this workshop looks at the challenges of designing for the dualism in objects consisting of a physical thing and a digital representation online, and how we could develop user interaction models that are understandable, liberates us from screens and move out in the physical world.

This full-day workshop focuses on how to create meaningful end-user interactions with many physical networked objects and also how to sustain ambient awareness of “networkedness” between physical objects – without mediating the experience via screens. Another topic is to explore suitable alternative interaction models for the Social Web of Things-paradigm, that move beyond interaction models borrowed from existing social media websites.

The workshop will shift between creative work in smaller groups and plenary sessions of presentation and discussion. We hope to attract a diverse group of researchers, academics, designers and others . Acceptance will be based on the originality, diversity and quality of submissions. Submissions will be presented in short “madness”-style presentations. At least one author must register for the workshop and the conference to attend.

Participants are invited to submit 2-4 page position papers in the mHCI Extended Abstracts format on one or more of the workshop topics. Submissions should be e-mailed to [log in to unmask] by April 8th 2011. You will be informed about acceptance on the 15th of May at the latest.
