Call for Papers
User Modeling and User-adapted Interaction
an International Journal
Special Issue on Empirical Evaluations of User Models
Deadline: 31 August 2000
The study of user modeling and user-adapted systems is now a well
established
field of research with its own biennial conference series and a journal,
UMUAI
that is in its tenth year of publication. Yet, there have been very few
empirical evaluations of user models published. To encourage researchers
to
report the results of their empirical evaluations of user models and
user-adapted software systems, we are calling for contributions for a
special
issue of UMUAI. This special issue will serve as a essential reference
for
other researchers who might want to evaluate their user models in the
future.
All types of empirical evaluations are welcome, such as:
o the effectiveness of user adaptations for task accuracy, task
completion
time, and/or task quality
o the influence of user adaptations on user satisfaction, cognitive
load,
and/or interaction patterns
o the accuracy of user models
o qualitative studies of user-modeling systems, such as case studies
ethnographic field studies, content analysis, self reports, and/or
user
interviews.
o evaluations or comparisons of user-model-acquisition algorithms
o empirical evaluation frameworks for user-modeling systems
o novel methods for obtaining user requirements such as eye-movement
studies
of user-adapted systems
o evaluations of the applicability of existing data from other domains
(e.g., sociological, demographics, market analysis, cognitive/social
psychology) for building user models or product design
o evaluations of strategies for expert reviews and usability testing
o evaluations of the utility of preference and performance measures
o Validation of surveys and metrics used to acquire user models
o Web-based remote testing of user-modeling systems
About UMUAI
The journal User Modeling and User-adapted Interaction is an archival
journal
that publishes mature and substantiated research results on the (dynamic)
adaptation of computer systems to their human users, and the role that the
system's model of the user plays in this context. Papers that present
untested
research ideas are not ready to be submitted to UMUAI. Instead, these
ideas
should first be presented at workshops to get feedback from
colleagues. Once
you can demonstrate ideas that are backed up by results, they are ready
for UMUAI. These results may be generated by building a
(partial) computer
implementation and from that, either analyze its behavior, run empirical
experiments, or analyze the idea using formal means. Many articles in
UMUAI
are therefore quite comprehensive and describe the results of several
years of
work. Consequently, UMUAI gives "unlimited" space to authors (as long as
what
they write is important) and also does not mind if research that is being
submitted to UMUAI has been previously published in bits and pieces at
workshops and conferences (as long as the synthesis provides significant
new
insights).
Important Dates
31 Jul 2000 (Recommended) Submit a one page abstract to guest editors
31 Aug 2000 Deadline for submission of full papers
15 Nov 2000 Notice of review results
31 Nov 2000 Manuscripts due in final form
One page abstracts should be sent to the guest editors prior to July 31,
2000,
especially if authors are concerned about relevance of the paper to the
special
issue. Abstracts are highly encouraged, but not required. These
abstracts
will be reviewed by only the guest editors.
Full paper submissions should be in the UMUAI format and will be reviewed
both
by the guest editors and by two other UMUAI reviewers. Authors are
strongly
encouraged to contact the editors for additional reporting standards
regarding
statistical measures. More details of submission formats are available at
UMUAI's web site, http://www.informatik.uni-essen.de/UMUAI.
