From the very first days of Xerox PARC's tabs, pads and boards displays have formed an integral part of the vision of pervasive computing. Today pervasive displays range from media facades in our urban environments through traditional public displays to new forms of embedded displays and multi-touch surfaces - providing us with a rich resource for receiving ambient information, complementing our personal screen real estate, or providing in-situ feedback in domains ranging from advertising to art to entertainment to public service.

While the basic idea seems innocuous enough, implementing visionary deployments that go beyond traditional digital signage or a simple second screen setup is far from trivial.

The aim of this special issue is to explore new technologies, methodologies, and applications that relate to all aspects of pervasive displays. Contributions may come from diverse fields such as human-computer interaction, distributed systems, dependable computing, psychology and sociology, the internet of things, cyber-physical systems, ubiquitous computing, ambient intelligence, architecture and urban planning, and arts and entertainment.

Relevant topics for this special issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

-          New hardware for pervasive displays.

-          Architectural aspects regarding the design, installation, coordination, and maintenance of a variety of pervasive displays; at large-scale, long-term, and with high heterogeneity.

-          Displays as IoT devices or edge-of-cloud nodes.

-          Systems software for pervasive displays.

-          Applications for pervasive displays, including their design, implementation, distribution, maintenance, and monetization, as well as their acceptance, use, and appropriation.

-          Domains and formative studies regarding the design, use, acceptance, and appropriation of pervasive displays

-          Evaluations and deployments, in private, semi-public, and public settings.

-          Interfaces and interaction techniques and technologies for displays at various sizes and in various settings, for a variety of uses.

-          Content design and management, including consumption analytics, distribution, caching, and coordination (both temporally and spatially).

-          Surveys of display systems and technologies.

The guest editors invite original and high-quality submissions addressing all aspects of this field, as long as the connection to the focus topic is clear and emphasized. Review or summary articles - for example critical evaluations of the state of the art, or an insightful analysis of established and upcoming technologies - may be accepted if they demonstrate academic rigor and relevance.

Note that Articles submitted to IEEE Pervasive Computing should not exceed 6,000 words, including all text, the abstract, keywords, bibliography, biographies, and table text. The word count should include 250 words for each table and figure. References should be limited to at most 15 citations (30 for survey papers).
