Affective, Interactive and Cognitive Methods for E-Learning Design:
Creating an Optimal Education Experience
A book edited by Dr. Aimilia Tzanavari, University of Nicosia, Cyprus and
Dr. Nicolas Tsapatsoulis, Cyprus University of Technology, Cyprus
Introduction
In e-learning, the learner spends a significant amount of his/her time
online, interacting with web-based applications. This interaction
carries tremendous weight in the learning process, because it directly
influences the way the learner receives, comprehends and ultimately
retains information. Affective, Interactive and Cognitive Methods for
E-Learning Design: Creating an Optimal Education Experience will try
to bridge the current gap that exists in e-learning literature. This
manuscript will focus on the study and application of human computer
interaction principles to e-learning design in order to offer learners
the optimal e-learning experience. In addition, advances in affective
computing will be addressed in the context of e-learning environments.
This book will give insight into the most important design issues
encountered and will offer solutions to these issues that will help
the specialist create HCI-sound e-learning materials, lessons, courses
or software.
Objective of the Book
This book aims to provide the relevant theoretical frameworks
associated with specific HCI topics/principles and with
topics/principles in affective computing that should be considered
when working in the area of e-learning. Perspectives from educators,
designers, and developers will be presented. Theory will be
complemented with real cases where the reader can see situations,
solutions and their results. Open research questions will be discussed.
Target Audience
Researchers in the areas of e-learning, affective computing and/or
HCI, as well as educators and/or professionals who are involved in the
design and development of e-learning material, lessons, complete
courses and/or e-learning software. Higher education students enrolled
in e-learning, multimedia, design and/or HCI courses will also benefit.
Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
Adaptive interfaces for eLearning systems
Learner and group modeling
Learning in the Information Society
Needs analysis and design phases of eLearning systems development
Designing for mLearning
Usability and Accessibility criteria for eLearning systems
Accessible interfaces in eLearning
Virtual Reality environments for education
Hypermedia and multimedia in eLearning systems
Ontologies for eLearning environments
Designing based on eLearning standards
Providing learner support
Learner experience evaluation methods and approaches
Accessibility of eLearning material
Affective computing in eLearning
Learner centered design (LCD)
Web advances and learning
?HCI in eLearning? Design Patterns
Submission Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before July
15, 2008, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission
and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted
proposals will be notified by August 15, 2008 about the status of
their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are
expected to be submitted by November 15, 2008. All submitted chapters
will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. This book is
scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.),
publisher of the ?Information Science Reference? (formerly Idea Group
Reference) and ?Medical Information Science Reference? imprints. For
