A Research Assistant position is available in the Computer Laboratory at
the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, to design, implement and
evaluate a real-time computer vision/machine learning system and
corresponding visual attentive user interfaces on Android portable
devices. Using the front-facing camera of these devices, the system will
monitor the user's gaze and eye movements to detect visual attention and
to recognise different visual activities while the user is interacting
with the devices.

The overall the goals of the project are:

- to develop robust computer vision and machine learning algorithms for
gaze estimation and eye movement analysis using the devices' integrated
front-facing cameras

- to integrate these two monitoring components into a real-time system
that runs entirely on the portable device, making use of GPU
optimisations where possible

- to evaluate the robustness and performance of the system for attention
detection and activity recognition in user studies with human
participants

- to help with the preparation and publication of scientific results

Keywords:
Human-computer interaction, Attentive user interfaces, Human and
computer vision, Machine learning, Eye tracking, Android/C/Java
programming

The project is funded by a Google Research Award. The position is open
for applicants from the European Union only (i.e. those not requiring a
visa to work in the UK) and is offered full-time for 6 months.

The successful candidate will have a Masters in Computer Science or
related areas, with strong skills in computer vision and machine
learning. The work requires good Java/C/Android programming skills and
previous experience with OpenCV and eye tracking is desirable. Good
knowledge of English and communication skills are important as well.

Please email any informal enquiries to Dr Andreas Bulling, email:
