Job Opportunity for Research Fellow in HCI at Northumbria University
School of Computer & Information Sciences, Northumbria University, UK
Closing date for applications: 28 February 2019
Full-time, fixed term post, 21 months
Start date: April 2019

We are seeking an experienced HCI researcher for a RCUK-funded postdoctoral research position to lead aspects of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research within the T-GRAINS project.

T-GRAINS Project

The T-GRAINS project (Transforming and growing relationships within regional food systems for improved nutrition and sustainability) is a 2-year collaborative interdisciplinary project that will investigate the role that regional food systems could play in promoting healthier and more sustainable food production and consumption practices, and the role that HCI can play in catalysing relationships between consumers and producers to achieve this. As well as this post, the T-GRAINS project is advertising for two further research associates to conduct farm-scale case studies of regional production and consumption practices (Cardiff University), and modelling of regional agricultural landscapes and alternative future scenarios for production (Rothamsted Research). All three PDRAs will be expected to collaborate across disciplines.

About the post

You will join the Northumbria Social Computing research group, or “NorSC”, in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences (CIS), and work closely with Dr Adrian Clear. This research will be conducted in collaboration with external partners (including Newcastle University, Cardiff University, Rothamsted Research, and Scotland’s Rural College). In particular, we are seeking to appoint an experienced researcher who can lead the co-design and development of (1) novel interactive visual tools for stakeholders to negotiate future scenarios for UK regional food systems by assisting them to visualise trade-offs and synergies between production, farm profitability, environmental impact and delivery of healthy balanced diets; and (2) new socio-digital tools for meaningfully connecting producers, retailers and consumers in co-created regional food systems.

The successful candidate will contribute to the planning and running of design workshops and engagements with research participants as well as the collection and analysis of data from interviews, design workshops and technology evaluations. Candidates with experience of applying HCI methods in the contexts of food, sustainability, or civic participation are particularly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications: You will have a PhD (or one that is close to completion) in HCI or a related aspect of human-centred computing.

Skills and Experience: Experience in the development of software designed for novel, in-the-wild, HCI interventions is a necessity. It is also expected you will have a track-record of publishing in leading human-computer interaction venues, such as CHI. The T-GRAINS project is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, and so you will have demonstrable experience and interest to work in multi-disciplinary teams. Excellent communication skills, as well as familiarity with a range of desktop publishing is essential. You will also bring research experience and understanding of designing and conducting studies and evaluations of technologies ‘in the wild’. It is expected you will have some prior experience of appropriate data collection and analysis, and be comfortable working with a range of research participants.
