Postgraduate opportunities at the Learning Sciences Research Institute (LSRI)
University of Nottingham

*PhD Studentships + MSc Scholarships available*

Located on the award-winning Jubilee campus at The University of 
Nottingham, the LSRI has an international
reputation for research in the learning sciences and technological 
innovation. Research at the Institute explores how current, new and 
emerging technologies can be designed and evaluated to enhance human 
learning and interaction.

The LSRI brings together staff expertise from the Schools of Computer 
Science and IT, Education, and Psychology, as well as links to other 
disciplines.


PhD Research
Scholarships available for 2006/07

The scope of learning sciences includes understanding the processes and 
practices of human learning, and designing new technologies and 
environments to enhance learning across all ages and cultures.  Key 
areas of research for the Institute are: global and distance learning; 
networked learning; designs for personal, mobile and informal learning; 
mixed-reality learning technology; playful and game-based learning; 
visual thinking and learning; analysis of classroom interactions,  and 
fundamental learning processes.

Applications may be made in any area related to the learning sciences, 
but must be interdisciplinary in focus.
Successful candidates will be jointly supervised by staff from at least 
two of the three Schools making up the
Institute.

The studentships cover fees and a student stipend of around £12,000 per 
year for UK and EU full-time students. Fees only are covered for 
part-time applicants. Contributions to fees for exceptional overseas 
(non-EU) students will be judged on a case-by-case basis.


MSc Advanced Interactive Technologies (for Work, Play and Learning)
Scholarships of £1,000 sterling are available in 2006/07

The MSc course offers an opportunity to extend your knowledge and skills 
of developing, using or evaluating
technology to enhance work, play and learning. The programme has been 
designed for graduates from a variety of
backgrounds in order to encourage interdisciplinary approaches to 
interaction design, research and development. It will be of most benefit 
to those wishing to enhance their careers prospects in sectors such as 
new media and
technology, entertainment, training, learning or research.

Students will engage with academics working at the forefront of research 
in the UK to explore the latest thinking and developments in 
technology-mediated interaction in the digital age.  Core modules 
include an exploration of
innovative technologies, advanced research methods, interaction design 
and the psychological aspects of learning and cognition.  Topics covered 
include games design, virtual, mixed and other realities, and 
applications of online and mobile computing.


Selection Criteria

Students applying for PhD Research or MSc will need at least a 2.1 first 
degree in Computer Science, Psychology,
Education or in an appropriate discipline. 
International students are encouraged to apply and should have an IELTS 
score of 6.5 or equivalent.
