ACM DIS 2006: The Conference on Designing Interactive Systems

DIS 2006 launches the second decade of the ACM conference series that
has become an internationally recognized forum for design researchers
and reflective practitioners. DIS 2006 is co-sponsored by IFIP WG 13.2.

Scope of the Conference

DIS welcomes papers on all varieties of interactive systems - digital
books, e-commerce Websites, home entertainment systems, hand-held
shopping appliances, homeland security and geographic information
systems, immersive games and other environments, medical and
health-care systems, networked communities. DIS welcomes papers on
design analysis, design representations, design methods, design
rationale capture, presentation and use, on innovation in design, and
on tools and environments for designing interactive systems.

DIS welcomes empirical studies of design practices, including
comparative studies, experience-based studies and lessons learned from
design projects, investigations and development of formal notations and
models, and new theoretical perspectives. DIS welcomes papers
exploring, defining, and developing the science of design.

Researchers, designers, educators, and students from all relevant
disciplines are invited to participate, including anthropology, art and
architecture, business, cognitive science, communication studies,
computer science, ergonomics, design studies, education, graphic
design, information systems, industrial engineering, interaction
design, journalism, law, linguistics and semiotics, psychology,
requirements engineering, sociology, software engineering, technical
communication, and user experience design.

Categories of submissions

DIS2006 accepts 6 categories of papers. The categories are intended to
assist reviewers in understanding the kind of contribution an author is
trying to describe. Authors should carefully categorize their

Design case Accounts of the design (rationale, process, outcomes and
evaluation) of an interactive product or system.

Methods and tools New theories, methods, and processes for use in
designing and developing interactive products and systems.

Reflective analyses Thought-provoking, well substantiated analyses of
issues related to all aspects of design.

Fieldwork and ethnography Findings, guidelines, etc. from studies of
real world settings, with clear relevance to the design and deployment
of interactive systems.

Laboratory studies Findings, techniques, methods, etc. from controlled
studies of products, systems, and other phenomena relevant to designing
interactive systems.

Education Issues related to design education supporting the design of
interactive systems.

Benefit statement

In all cases, a paper must break new ground and its contribution must
offer a clear benefit. Authors should develop a 30-word statement of
benefit for papers they submit. This statement will be used by
reviewers to understand the scope and depth of a paperís contribution.

Paper format

Format papers in ACM format
( Papers must be no
longer than ten pages, including all additional material such as
references, appendices, and figures. Full papers must include a title,
sufficient space for the author names, contact information and
affiliations, abstract, keywords, body, and references.

The abstract must be 150 words or less and must be included in the
paper; it must clearly state the paperís contribution to designing
interactive systems. All references must be complete, accurate and
accessible to the public.

Paper Submission

Papers and benefit statements will be submitted electronically
following a procedure to be posted on the conference website
( Submission deadline is December 15.
