TRACK COVERAGE
Once the realm of geeks and techies, open source has made in-roads into mainstream computing. The cry for open source reverberates throughout academia, business, and personal computing as people look for viable applications, stable systems, and an escape from expensive upgrades. We've long been aware that open source software such as Apache runs more than half of the Web servers in the world. However, in recent years we've seen open source displace proprietary technologies and systems.

Whether it's Linux on a desktop, OpenOffice calculating a spreadsheet formula, or Evolution accessing e-mail, open source no longer is a second-class citizen. However, open source technologies and systems are not a magical techno-panacea. While purchasing costs are low, support costs can be just as high as proprietary systems in some cases. Open source technologies and systems face many challenges in the form of proprietary systems and software, cultural biases, and a general lack of user knowledge.

This track invites discussions on technological challenges and implementations, case studies, research in progress, and any conversation centering on open source development, culture, business models, or various other topics.
