THIRD INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION WITH MOBILE DEVICES

10 September 2001, Lille, France
An IHM-HCI 2001 Workshop
http://www.mobilehci.org

CALL FOR PAPERS
The last few years have seen the development and marketing of a vast range
of mobile computing devices. Ranging from ever smaller laptops through
palmtops to WAP phones and digital devices such as cameras, these devices
share a common problem: attempting to give users access to powerful
computing services and resources through small devices, which typically have
tiny visual displays, poor audio facilities and limited input techniques.
They also introduce new challenges such as designing for intermittent &
expensive network access and design for position aware & context sensitive
devices.

The Mobile HCI workshop series provides a forum for academics and
practitioners to discuss the challenges and potential solutions for
effective interaction with mobile systems. It is intended to cover the
design, evaluation and applications of techniques and approaches for all
mobile computing devices. This workshop builds on the success of the
previous two International Workshops on Human Computer Interaction with
Mobile Devices held in Glasgow in May 1998 and Edinburgh in August, 1999
(http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/mobile99). It will run as part of the IHM-HCI 2001
conference in Lille, France.

Papers are invited on, but are not limited to, the following topics:
· visualisation techniques;
· audio interaction;
· evaluation;
· safety issues;
· case studies of mobile devices and tasks;
· location dependent and independent computing;
· integration of mobile devices and telecommunications;
· ergonomics;
· web design for mobile devices;
· novel user interfaces;
· multimodal interaction.

The workshop is intended to cover not only PDAs but also voice terminals,
smart phones and laptops. Attendance will be limited in order to encourage
interaction. It will be possible for people to attend the workshop even
though they have not submitted a paper.

DEADLINES
Extended abstracts (3-4 pages, Personal and Ubiquitous Computing format,
PDF) should be sent to Mark Dunlop at the address given below by 30 June
2001. The proceedings of the workshop will be published in the journal
Personal and Ubiquitous Technologies. For full details see the Workshop Web
site at http://www.mobilehci.org
