ISMAR 2014: Augment Everything Everywhere for Everyone

Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) melt the barriers between virtual media, the physical world and our imagination by enriching our ability to interact with all three. New applications in diverse areas such as Engineering, Entertainment, Arts, Education Media and Humanities push the boundaries of science and technology. As the premier conference in the field, ISMAR is responding to this evolution by expanding the program scope. Two key areas of submissions are Science & Technology (S&T) covering emerging capabilities of MR/AR and the MASH’D program covering the human side of technology application, including real world explorations by Media professionals, Artists, Social Scientists, Humanity scholars and Designers (MASH’D).

*** NEW EXPANDED SCOPE ***

The theme of this year’s conference is to "Augment Everything Everywhere for Everyone". ISMAR 2014 will cover the FULL range of technologies encompassed by the Mixed Reality spectrum, from interfaces in the real world to fully immersive experiences. This range goes far beyond the traditional definition of Augmented Reality, which focused on precise 3D tracking, visual display and real-time performance. 

We specifically invite contributions in the following EMERGING AREAS:

* HUMAN PERFORMANCE & PERCEPTION: Learning, Training, Therapy, Rehabilitation, Virtual Analytics and Entertainment are beginning to leverage the convergence of disciplinary applied MR/AR research to expand how we experience and enhance the limits of human experience.

* AUGMENTED VIRTUALITY: Telepresence, tele-immersion, real-time 3D video acquisition and streaming, (auto-)stereoscopic displays, multi-user 3D displays, tele-operation and live video stream augmentation (e.g., in robotics), broadcast augmentation and virtual studios.

* MULTI-SENSORY MIXED REALITY: Auditory, haptic and olfactory interfaces.

* WEARABLE COMPUTING: Wearable displays (e.g., Google Glass, smart watches), wearable sensors and actuators, augmented humans (e.g., cyborg technology).

* SPATIAL INPUT: Tangible interfaces, ambient-device interaction and novel sensors (e.g., situated/embedded touch input), location sensing technologies (of any kind, including non real-time), smart spaces, situated 2D displays, enabling technologies for spatial interfaces (e.g., 3D reconstruction, touch interfaces, gesture detection).

* SPATIAL OUTPUT: Wearable projectors, projector-camera systems, ambient displays.

ISMAR 2014 will mark the 17th year of the conference, which started in 1998 as the International Workshop on Augmented Reality. It will be held in Munich, Germany, one of the world's leading places for AR/MR research and industry and certainly one of the most enjoyable cities to visit in general. We invite you to participate in this important event for the exchange of new ideas in this exciting field!

*** MASH’D, The Human Side of Technology ***
(Media, Arts, Social Sciences, Humanities & Design)

The 2014 ISMAR MASH’D program is celebrating the convergence of diverse creative disciplines that will be defining future AR/MR experience. Formerly called the Arts, Media and Humanities (AMH) track, this program invites a broader base of contributors addressing the transformative, human-side of AR/MR technology. Providing a diverse program of exhibition, discourse and research in a rapidly enriching AR/MR experience, we invite artists, musicians, media producers, humanity scholars, social scientists, educators, and experience and product designers to explore the potential of Augmented and Mixed Reality real-world applications. Contributors are invited to present and contextualize creative work in AR or MR media forms, and to reflect on the place of these technologies in various fields of art and design. Scholars are
invited to present work that analyzes or critiques AR/MR in the contexts of current social forms or the history of art and media. We welcome papers, posters, panels, case studies, and demos from academic, civic and commercial sectors. We strongly recommend creative workshops to be submitted to the ISMAR Workshops program.

*** Submission Categories ***

Submissions in the following categories are solicited. For detailed information on topics, submission and formatting, visit the website at

* Long Papers, Short Papers, and Posters (S&T)

Long Papers must be 8-10 pages long and will be published in the ISMAR 2014 conference proceedings and submitted to the IEEE Xplore digital library. The ten best Long Papers will be invited to submit an extended version to a special issue of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). Short papers, of up to 6 pages, will be published in the ISMAR 2014 conference proceedings and submitted to the IEEE Xplore digital library. All papers will be presented orally at the conference. There is no distinction between full and short papers in terms of the expected quality. The acceptance for publication will be partly based on the contribution per page of the paper. For example, a paper with eight pages will be expected to have more contribution than one with five pages. Material simultaneously submitted to ISMAR 2014 and another venue will be rejected without review.

Posters will be reviewed on the basis of an extended abstract, which must be 2 pages long. They will be published in the ISMAR 2014 conference proceedings and submitted to the IEEE Xplore digital library. They represent work-in-progress and the poster submission deadline is after the notification deadline of the paper track. A poster presentation session will be organized at the conference.

* Workshops

ISMAR 2014 will have a series of workshops to cover innovative applications and newly emerging areas of AR/MR. ISMAR 2014 workshops are a complementary forum to the main conference. We invite you to submit workshop proposals with pioneering research and fresh application areas on themes from both Science & Technology as well as Arts, Media, & Humanities tracks. * Panels

We welcome panel proposals that address current challenges and opportunities in fields related to ISMAR, in a format that engages the audience in ways not possible in standard presentation formats.

* Tutorials

The purpose of the tutorials is to expand the knowledge of the AR/MR community. Topics can range from introductory material for AR/MR novices to highly technical topics for AR/MR researchers. We invite individuals or teams interested in presenting a tutorial to submit proposals.

* Demonstrations and Exhibits

ISMAR 2014 will provide exhibition space for demonstrations of AR/MR to the community. These demonstrations can take the shape of live, interactive demos, lab/corporate exhibitions, interactive art exploration, or combination of these. Submissions will be in the form of a one-page synopsis.

* Case-Studies (MASH’D)

The presentation of emerging applications of innovative uses of MR/AR that expand and challenge current practices and paradigms and defining radically new perceptions of the future of the Human Experience with MR/AR.

* Doctoral Symposium

The ISMAR Doctoral Consortium will again take place as part of ISMAR 2014. The goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to create an opportunity for PhD students to present their research, discuss their current progress and future plans, and receive constructive criticism and guidance regarding their future work and career objectives.

* Birds of a Feather

Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF) sessions provide the opportunity for groups of people who share interests, goals, technologies, environments, or backgrounds to meet at ISMAR 2014 to conduct informal presentations, discussions and/or demonstrations. Details regarding BOFs will be available on the ISMAR website.

* Tracking Competition

The first Tracking Competition at ISMAR 2008 caught much attention and has been a significant attraction at several subsequent ISMARs. For ISMAR 2014, we will expand the scope with a new tracking competition with multiple challenges and cutting edge scenarios. Details regarding the competition (rules, dates) will be available on the ISMAR website shortly.

*** Conference Venue ***

ISMAR 2014 will be held on the 10-12 September 2014 at the Garching Campus of the Technical University of Munich. The campus is located in the small town of Garching, about 20 km north Munich, and is easily reachable using the public transportation system.

Munich is located in the state of Bavaria in the southern part of Germany. Munich and the surrounding area offer a large number of tourist attractions, ranging from the annual Oktoberfest (starting one week after ISMAR on 20 September 2014) and many museums both artistic and technical. Downtown Munich is replete with cultural heritage, various beer drinking halls and beer gardens ideal for technical discussions, Bavarian castles for inspiration, and a terrific geographical environment including the Alps and many lakes.
