Call for Papers 
---Special section on multimedia for cooking and eating activities---

The IEICE Transactions on Information and Systems announces that it 
will publish a special section entitled "Special Issue on Multimedia 
for Cooking and Eating Activities" in July 2019.
Cooking is one of the most fundamental activities of humankind. It is 
not only connected with the joy of eating but also deeply affects 
various aspects of human life such as health, culinary art, 
entertainment, and human communication. However, due to the aging 
society, nuclear families, and changes of lifestyles, communication 
through food, succession of food culture and cooking techniques, 
health management by meals are gradually becoming difficult. Efforts 
to solve and support these problems by information technology are now
seen everywhere in recent years as various information devices have 
become popular in ordinary households and daily life. Following this
trend, IEICE Technical Committee on Cooking and Eating Activities 
(CEA) has been aiming to provide an opportunity for such research 
groups to discover each other, introduce their trials, and discuss 
their status and where they should go. At this year's meeting, CEA 
held a workshop in conjunction with IJCAI-ECAI2018 (International 
Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence-the European Conference 
on Artificial Intelligence). We plan to publish the special section
that consists of the papers published in the CEA 2018 as well as new 
contributions with related topics. The submitted papers are expected 
to be related to Cooking and Eating Activities and its Applications. 

1. Scope 
This special section aims at timely dissemination of research in these
areas. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: 

- Application for cooking / eating support 
- Cooking / eating archiving and recognition 
- Learning contents creation for cooking 
- Analysis of cooking / eating video 
- Recipe image/video retrieval 
- Analysis and utilization on cooking recipe 
- Menu planning, dietary management, and food log 
- Artificial agent for cooking/eating activity 
- Sensing of taste / smell / texture 
- Food communication (human-to-human / human-to-computer communication) 
- Ubiquitous environment and interface in kitchen / dining room 
- Intelligent home appliance 
- Cooking navigation interface for the dementia and physically 
challenged person support 
- Multimedia learning contents for dietary 
- Multimedia information service for food safety and security 
- Analysis of Web contents on cooking / eating activities 
- Dataset and tools for cooking / eating activity analysis and 
benchmarking 

2. Submission Instructions 
- A manuscript should be prepared according to the guideline given in 
  "The Information for Authors" 
  (http://www.ieice.org/eng/shiori/mokuji_iss.html). We encourage the 
  authors to use the IEICE Style File 
  (http://www.ieice.org/ftp/index-e.html). The preferred length of the 
  manuscript is 8 pages for a PAPER and 2 pages for a LETTER with the 
  format determined by the IEICE Style File. 
- Submit the manuscript through the IEICE Web site 
  (https://review.ieice.org/regist/regist_baseinfo_e.aspx). Choose 
  "[Special-CE] Multimedia for Cooking and Eating Activities" in the 
  menu of "Journal/Section" in the submission page. Do not choose 
  "[Regular-ED] Information and Systems" or other special sections. 
- Authors must agree to the "Copyright Transfer and Page Charge 
  Agreement" via electronic submission. 
- Submission deadline of the manuscript is October 12, 2019.

4. Notes 
* If the paper is accepted, authors are requested to pay for the page 
  charge. 
* The standard period of 60 days between the notification (of 
  conditional accept) and the second submission can be shortened 
  according to the review schedule. 
* At least one of the authors must be an IEICE member when the 
  manuscript is submitted for review. Invited papers are exceptional. 
  We recommend authors unaffiliated with IEICE to apply for the 
  membership from http://www.ieice.org/eng/join_ieice/index.html 
* Open Access: The IEICE Transactions on Information and Systems is 
  an open access journal since January 2017. Open access to "IEICE 
  Transactions on Information and Systems" is available via J-STAGE
  (https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/browse/transinf/). 
* Upon accepted for publication, all authors, including authors of 
  invited papers, should pay the page charges covering part of the 
  publication cost around March 2019. If payment is not completed by 
  15 April, 2019, the manuscript will be handled as rejection.
