The technical infrastructure for the home is growing fast, and more and more options to use rich media are offered to users. Audio and video content can be consumed on different platforms, including computers, tablets, mobile devices and TV. Current techniques enable on-demand reception and social exchange related to TV and video content. Such technological ecosystems allow for new device-bridging interaction concepts that integrate content from different sources, can be personalized and support social exchange as well. However, the added complexity when designing for cross-platform interactions requires multi-faceted research that matches people’s needs, with technological feasibility. It needs to explore the limitations and opportunities through novel interactions between people and content.

Nowadays, TV means more then receiving broadcast content in a uni-directional manner. Mobile devices, e.g., smartphone, laptop, are been used as sources for accessing media content and additional services in different contexts. Social communities such as Facebook offer fast and easy ways for collaborative media sharing. Media content can be recommended, shared with friends from web-communities and discussed remotely. Such functionalities can be accessed on different devices, open up the design space for more integrated approaches.

Concepts for social recommendations, remote watching, related chat, and awareness are existing for some time. From a design-oriented perspective, new concepts evolve that add value for the user in a cross-platform manner, e.g. second screen, parallel twitter and chat sessions, personalized channels etc. The issue is rather a contextualized, well-adjusted functional design (e.g., by consider characteristics of shared vs. personal screen, user vs. household profile, interaction modality) than integrating the same functionalities into all devices available. Further work may explore new design perspectives, on how users can be supported by cross-platform approaches, by personalization options, and by functionalities for social exchange.

Current devices and techniques (e.g., Kinect) enable new and/or additional in- and output modalities, e.g. for games, remote control concepts, ambient assisted living etc.. Interactions with gestures and speech can support and enrich interactions in cross-platform environments. Further work may explore new ways to stimulate user engagement and ease navigation. The interplay of different devices, techniques and content sources allow novel HCI approaches of ambient awareness, proxemics interaction, (semi-)automatic profiling and customization.

The special issue on cross-platform IT technology for the home focuses on novel design ideas, interaction concepts, and device-bridging approaches that address up-to-date technologies. We also welcome contributions that help to understand the social practice of media reception, and that support user to get involved into the design.

The journal calls for original, high quality contributions related to the requirements, concepts, design, implementation, evaluation or empirical work. Articles should focus on novel cross-platform approaches with a strong user-centered perspective. Topics include but are not limited to the following themes:

- Interdisciplinary exploration of design, adoption, usage and appropriation, policies and business strategies around these applications and services,
- User-centered design of devices, systems, applications and infrastructure to support and enable these environments,
- Cross-platform and cross-media interaction, user experience, technology acceptance
- Interface adaptations for different devices (e.g. second screens),
- Design studies of novel I/O interfaces, gestures, speech, sensors,
- Proxemics and seamless interactions for the home,
- Social enrichment related to video and TV,
- Approaches and methods for designing, prototyping, and evaluating user experiences related to cross-platform usage of rich media

***Paper Submission***
Submitting authors should follow the Author Guidelines available from Selected highly ranked papers in the field of interactive video and TV from EuroITV 2012 ( can be extended for this special issue to at least 30%. All paper will go through a standard peer review.
