Special Issue: Quality, Values and Choices in investigating
Human-Computer Interaction

Guest editors:
Peter J Wild, University of Bath
Andy Dearden, Sheffield Hallam University
Ann Light, Usability News, and Queen Mary College London

The topic:
This call for manuscripts follows on from the CHI2005 workshop on
'Quality, Value(s) and Choice: Exploring Deeper Outcomes for HCI
Products'

Recent debates in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and elsewhere have
highlighted a tension between dispassionately providing support to the
design of products and services, regardless of the intended use, and
the social responsibility of the scientist. The technical challenges
of designing Human-centred Information and Communication Technologies
(ICT) are great; however, it is a reasonable assertion that many
members of the HCI community feel a need to do good for the world. But
what kind of 'good', and in whose definition of 'the world'? This
implicit motivation has received too little explicit attention within
HCI and related disciplines. This special issue will give centre stage
to values: both the values that motivate the direction of our work and
the value that we seek to deliver.

In the last few years there has been a shift away from usability as
the sole design objective to wider qualities of affect and experience.
These turns raise new issues relating to value, values, and ethical
choices in HCI. The more reflective areas of theory and practice ask
what underpins the projects we select to pursue, the methods chosen to
progress them, and choices as to how we present our findings. But HCI,
Information Systems and related fields are vast and
multi-disciplinary. Theory itself is often implicit, value and values
can be even more obscured.

How do we go beyond the statement 'Well it all depends on context' to
be able to guide users, designers and the HCI discipline as a whole?

Areas of interest to the special issue:

    * Quality and qualities in HCI
    * Social responsibility and HCI
    * Ethics and HCI
    * Morality and HCI
    * Justice and HCI
    * ICT in social action settings
    * Politics in participatory design
    * Value sensitive design
    * Value driven software engineering

However, these areas are a starting point not an end point.
